308 bullet suggestions for 1000 yards

I just acquired my first 308. It's a Savage 10 FCP LE McMillan. I have always wanted to shoot steel targets out to 1000 yards so I'm on a quest this year to do just that with this rifle.

What's a few good bullet suggestions to get me there?

Also, would the more expensive Lapua brass net me any real world noticeable advantages over the Winchester brass I have.

Not if you're willing to sort/cull the bagged stuff. Of course, once you invest that kind of time, and pitch X percent based on whatever criteria... the price gap btwn Lapua and Winchester starts to shrink in a hurry.

Between my three sons & I we have 5 .308s, two heavy barreled model 10 savages 26" & 24", two remington 700s one heavy 20", one sporter weight 24" and a Howa 1500 Target master 20" heavy.

We shoot 1030 yards on steel frequently and have no problem with 168 & 178 gr AMAXs, 168 gr Berger Hunting VLDs work well for us also.

We've got some nosler brass but most of the brass is mixed. Someday I'm going to get some Lapua brass and see how good a round I can make.

It's going to be a lot easier than you think. Then it will get as complicated as you want to make it!

Thanks for that info 6.5creed. :)

Those two model 10 Savages we have, it's pretty hard not to shoot good groups with 43.5 grains of Varget, a CCI BR2 primer and either of those 168 grain bullets .020 off the lands.

I don't think it qualifies for a "match" round because I really don't put a lot of extra effort into it.

Heres my model 10, I bought the barreled action from a member here and put it in a used Choate stock and mounted up a 10x SWFA I got in a trade.

It hammers that Varget load!

Guess I don't know how to upload pics since the sight changed?

The Lapua has a thicker neck than Winchester. Might tighten up the neck clearance in a factory chamber a little. Less clearance also work hardens less.

What is your BBL twist. I personely don't have a 308, but a good shooting friend of mine recently switched to the Berger 200 Gr Hybrid. He giggles every time he pulls the trigger now!!

shooting 200s requires a very long freebore, and recoil is not insubstantial. They shoot great if you set up for them, but they are not for the novice shooter and they only pay dividends once you get to 1000 yards.

Here ia another vote for the 175 SMK. Your best results will come with a muzzle velocity @ 2700 f/s. Don't let the 1000 yard velocity drop below supersonic. This is pretty fast for a 175, so work it up carefully.

I'll throw a point out here about bullets. I would strongly suggest comparing BC values for various bullets.

For example, the aforementioned 175 SMK has virtually the same G7 BC as the Berger 155.5 Fullbore bullet. When we factor in the 200 fps higher muzzle velocity, the lighter bullet gives you less drop, wind drift, and recoil.

If it were me, I'd try the 185 Juggernaut if I had sufficient freebore. If the chamber is shorter, the 155.5 would be my choice. Both are easy to tune and shoot well out of a variety of barrel lengths.
