308 bullet suggestions for 1000 yards

Just ordered a box of the Sierra 175 grain tipped Matchkings to try after I saw their BC and lower cost. Anyone tried them? They should do well in my 1-10 twist 24" barrel I would think. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/14...-308-diameter-175-grain-polymer-tip-boat-tail

I did look at the 185 juggernaut as well but for the cost difference and how close the BC's are between those and the tipped Matchkings I opted to try the Matchkings for now.

I gave my son one of those rifles. 175gr SIE HPBT pushed by IMR4064 or Varget will meet your needs. Great shooting rifles for the price.

Lapua brass is worth the extra cost over Winchester Brass.

Good Shooting

I just acquired my first 308. It's a Savage 10 FCP LE McMillan. I have always wanted to shoot steel targets out to 1000 yards so I'm on a quest this year to do just that with this rifle.

What's a few good bullet suggestions to get me there?
I have over 50 rifles and when I started using berger bullets I got a real eye opener. all my guns will go great out to 1000yds. if I ever get gun that wont shoot bergers I sell it right away! at the most bergers cost me ten cents more to shoot. I also have to take 50yds off any program past 700yds. and bye the way the range record at my 1000yd range is still held by .223 shooting 70gr bergers. record 4.89 5 shots.

anyone tried Berger 168 gr Hybrids out to 1000 yds?
Regularly. 308 .085 freebore, 12 twist Bartlein 5R. Enough Varget or H4895 to push them at 2948 or 2920. They shoot very well. Only a couple inches inside the 155hybrid running 3030 in a 10mph 90 degree wind. But hey two inches is two inches and the 10 ring is only 5" wide.

Yep tried them & stayed with them. Rem 700 sps 26" Criterion. Running 2700 fps with 43.7 of Varget. Shot 5 of 5 at 960 yards for our benchrest match last Sat. Still doing load workup for IMR 4064.

Long range loads for my Savage 10 FCP-K are...

208 A-max, 41.3gr Varget, Lapua brass, 2.945" kissing lands, 2,440 fps.

190 SMK, 49.2gr H-4350, Winchester brass, don't remember coal but it's 0.020" Jam in the lands, 2,720 fps. Quite the unconventional and very compressed load, but shoots so damn good !

I'm looking really hard at these due to their BC and cost............ http://www.midwayusa.com/product/14...-308-diameter-175-grain-polymer-tip-boat-tail

I've shot a lot of these recently and they are good LR bullets. I've also used the 185 gr Juggernauts and found them to perform well at LR. Cost advantage to the TMK's. That said, the Hornady 178 A-Max is nothing to snort at and is less expensive than the TMK's.

They'll all work well at 1K. If you are reaching out to beyond 1K, then go with the heaviest bullet you can get to reach your desired range at supersonic speeds. The weight helps fight the wind better.

Also, would the more expensive Lapua brass net me any real world noticeable advantages over the Winchester brass I have.

Winchester brass does have a slightly greater capacity than Lapua. This could be an advantage with heavy bullets and some powders. A lot of sorting though in order to get uniform cases.

Sierra 175 smk tipped G7=0.267
Berger 185 jug G7=0.284

Not so close BCs...

Not that far apart and with the extra speed of the 175 vs the 185 and the Sierra being about 30% less in cost, I figured this is what I wanted to try. Not saying the 185 isn't a great choice, just not my choice for now.

175gr sierra match king in a 10 twist for me is the ticket and varget powder..

+1 on the 175 SMK's. Did well in my 26" 1:10 12VLP at 1000 yards and kept me competitive in 600 yard F T/R until I went off the deep end with a new rig. 168 SMK's are trouble at 1000 yards.

Listen closely to the advice on freebore. Your SAAMI spec factory chamber is not necessarily going to give you room for a 185 Juggs and you can bet money the 200 Hybrid won't fit unless you have a custom chamber.

Speaking of 185 Juggs, IF it did fit in your chamber try it with Lapua Palma brass and H4895. Get a chrono and see where you can get your velocity up to so you can better deal with the wind.

I used Berger 168 gr Hybrids in my F-TR rifle and had good accuracy but the wind does move them around. I now use the Berger 185 Hybrids and would recommend them.

I have never shot 1000 yards but have perfected a load that is best for my gun. It uses 4320 with 168 grain AMAX. At 100 yards.

IMHO, start with 175 smk's or 175 berger OTM's should shoot in most any .308. 168's have never been reliable for me past 800 yards. If your testing and loading time is short... spend the extra money for Lapua brass. Varget, IMR4064, H4895, R15 and many others will shoot the 175's very well. Most .308's are easy to tune. I don't try to get fancy with this round, just find a load and enjoy shooting it.

Try Berger 185s. They seem to be the perfect balance of velocity and BC to work great at 1k. The higher BC s in the heavier Berger's for the 308 don't make up for the loss of velocity you'll get. Just the same for the 175 and 168. The speed gain you'll get will not help you outshoot the BC s you'll get from the 185. Try them, you'll be glad you did.

I was getting around 2700 with the 185. That's what comes to mind. It's been a while. Used RL 15. Again it's been years but it was my go to bullet for beyond 600 , particularly in wind.
