.300 WSM WOW!

Central is 11”

Second target.
S2, 1,2,3 shot at same elevation setting.

Shot 7 was definitely me, got a bit excited after 4,5&6 landed together
8,9,10 and 11 another good group.

The difficulty increases exponentially each 100yards you move beyond 1000yards.

There’s a pairs match at the same range next weekend at 8,9 and 1000yards. Really looking to see how it goes at these more typical ranges.

Here is something I didn't see mentioned. Maybe the difference in points is also contributed by the fact they seem to be more accurate then other cartridges. They don't seem to be thrown out of tune as quick by the changing atmospheric and temp changes. I am basing my opinion of shooting other cartridges and 12 years experience shooting the WSM at 1000 yard BR. I have seen the 284 and most 7mm cartidges shot and they just seem to be not as accurate as the 300 WSM. It sure does win its share of Aggregates and world records in 1000 yard BR. Matt

Ben,
Unless you had a different target to the rest of us,the centrals/V bulls are greater than 11“ diameter,we were using the British Match Rifle Centre which has a 24“ Bull and The V Bull is half the area of the Bull, the Australian Match Rifle V Bull is half the diameter of the Bull, the Australian V bull is 12“ in diameter, the British V Bull is greater than that.Apart from that there was some great shooting done.

Thanks mike.

I was just going off what I was told by the silver mountains bloke.

I was hoping for ICFRA targets. But that’s okay it still worked for load development.

Looking at how it’s represented on the graphic, the bull is a little less than 2moa wide at 1200yards and a tiny bit over at 1100yards so a 12” central sounds right.

Great for 200 & 210's, should work with the 215's as well. - I tried H4831 ssc and haven't tried H4350 yet with the 215
I use H4350 in the one 300WSM I shoot with an 11 twist and 200-20X bullets. My velocity is 2930 and I am fairly close to max with that load. I believe if you went with H4350 and the 215s you might end up at a velocity level BELOW 2850. I have not tried H4350 with the 215s. However, just judging from the velocities of the extremely short bearing surfaced bullet of the 200-20x, you may have trouble getting near 2910-2920 mark with the 215s..

I am using RL23
I am still undecided between 64.0 and 65.0gr

I ran into pressure at 2900fps with 2213sc, I’m pretty sure I would find pressure sooner with 2209 (H4350)

I start to see some pressure at 2950fps with the RL23.

Need to re confirm which charge works best at a distance closer than 1100yards

But 64.0gr at 2890fps gave me a group approximate 6” high at 1100 yards the 5th being low (possibly me still learning to drive it as I put a low left in another string) otherwise it would have had about 3” of vertical at 1100yards.

What velocity are you getting with H4350??

Length of the barrel??

I have lots of it on hand but was under the impression I won’t find the velocity I am after.

My experience with .284 Win, Shehane and .300 WSM is that they are all capable of equal accuracy. The difference, as you noted, is the wide tuning window and forgiving nature of .300 WSM. It is easier to find and hold tune with .300 WSM.

Fired in the pairs match today. 3 ranges, 800, 1000 & 1000 15 shots.

My first shot with the WSM in anger. It was a good test, windy and bumpy conditions with direction changes. Not to mention the slow course of fire with pair shooting which I haven't done much of (must fire your shot within 60 seconds of the target appearing so no waiting out for your condition).

Fired a 89.10 (149.10) at 800 (won the range)
83.4 (143.4) first 1000 (won the range)
78.3 (138.3) last 1000 (got hammered with direction changes) managed a few 3's when the wind turned dow the range(US 7's)

I was happy with how well the 215's held elevation, I didn't lose a shot out the top or bottom all day, I would of expected more vertical movement with my 284 in those conditions.

I am definitely going to persist with this chambering, it seems consistent in rough conditions and at the velocities I am firing the 215's handles reasonably well in the bags.

We have a major 3 day shoot in a few weeks time with a lot of ranges beyond 800 yards, unfortunately the range has an energy limit of 3500ft/lbs so I will have to decide between my 284 or my SUAM, otherwise it would be an easy choice to take the WSM.

Thanks to Ben for starting this thread and inspiring me to give the 300WSM a go!!

Ben,
Congrats on win. I tried to use my 6.5 CR for match at Williamsport (PA) and got smacked by wind pretty bad. After 2 matches, I am getting a new barrel chambered for 300 WSM and your information helped me tremendously. I wanted to go with 230 hyd, but decided to go with 215.
Thank you again.

If all it took was bigger the all would have one. In the match in Houston last week I believe every caliber was represented in the top 10. Bet is was the same for the bottom 10. The nut tuning and driving the gun influences the outcome way more than the caliber. Rumor has it Benjamin has a 338 in the works. With all that said I also have 300WSM in the works.

AFAIK Ben had the only 30 cal in the top 10. The rest were 7MM's, one 7 WSM, a couple 7 Saums, and the rest 284 Variants.

Hey we are all here to help one another whenever possible. I am just starting out on this "journey" if you will and have A LONG way to go.. But I had to start somewhere and the 30 cal seemed to be the best place to start, at least from my point of view.

Hey Doug! I believe that if David Mann, John Myers and Ken Dickerman had been present, there would have been "a few" more "30s" in the top ten!
