300 WIN MAG or 300 WSM for long range varmints

I am thinking of building a 300 win mag. or 300 WSM for varmints to 800 yards. I was thinking perhaps a 1:17 twist so I can shoot the 110 gr. Hornady bullets for vaporizing hogs, crows, etc. Any input or experience with this type set up please share your thoughts and thanks for looking.

There are a couple of threads about this that has some good Info, it's in this varmint hunting section. I started one and posted in they other, I have been shooting 17 twist 30 cals for a long time. I have a 300 RUM, 300 WSM, and a 300 Win Mag, all 17 twist and shoot 110gr Hornady's Vmax's Sierra's HPs and TTSXs I also shoot the 130 TTSXs. They are all 30" cut rifle bartlein barrels, they are insane the 300wsm with 75gr varget 4100fps + 300 Winmag 88gr RL17 4300fps + and the 300 rum with 111 gr of RL 17 the fps is so high I don't dare post it. you or any of the forum onlookers would never believe it. I was ridiculed on shooters forum and am never going though that again. Apparently the resident experts on that forum said that a 300 rum max's out a 3800 fps, and when I said that I was experiencing 4moa of bullet drop @500Yards I was a liar. Even after I posted this article they said you can't believe everything you read on they internet. So basically they were also calling Richard Franklin a liar, Nice crowd.

Dam thats a sweet rig. I am intruiged with the speed. I am thinking of the 300 win mag cartridge but tell me what the max range would be I would like to get to at least 800 yards if possible.

I have shot it out to 1000yds, I am not a good 1000yrd shooter. But the guy I was with is an excellent 1000 yard plinker with lots of experience, he was saying to me that he was shooting over the target until he figured out there was only like 10MOA of drop at 1K. He was saying to me that his grouping was a little bigger than he is use to, but if he spent some time with it he definitely could close it up, all in all he was pretty impressed. So to answer your question 800 yrds is on the high end for this type of shooting, but with a little trigger time I am sure you would figure it out.

PS: It's just like a 308 only with twice the powder.

Why not go with like a 284, 6.5x284? A 300 magnum is kinda overkill. Also the light 30cal bullets in a 17tw i doubt would hit anything smaller than a barn at 800

You would be mistaken if you thought that. many have done this combo with great success.

Almost , almost anything could work , but why take a chance , go with a 6.5 or 7 mm , better bullet .

Hey Jim, sorry I don't have any and don't know anyone willing to give there's up. Way to much fun,
I am contemplating buying a 30 cal 17 twist button. So a $400.00 cut rifle blank won't be they only option.

It's not always the FPS. Fun , fun burning twice as much powder then shooting a less than optimum bullet , can you say , never mind . 1, 2,3,4,5.... Still counting it's not working .

sounds like a blast. I almost can't contain my excitement. When stopping at a street light across for a 60s muscle car, I have never heard anyone utter the words, I like the newer ones better with there sleeker looks and fuel injection with better fuel economy. Maybe we should all pack it in and drive minivans.

Read Richard Franklin's article. If you are going to do it a 300 WSM gives you just about as much velocity as the bigger stuff with 20 or more grains less powder. I would rather do a 6mm though. Better barrel life, better accuracy and better bullets. A groundhog doesn't know if it was killed with 40 clicks or 50 clicks in the scope. To me the best accuracy is where it is at. Matt

Farmer , Dean , I'm sorry , really . I had a rough day shooting prone , at my age , nothing on my body feels normal .
I have a few Hot rods , a 32 ford , 48 anglia , 30 Chevy 3 window . So I don't follow the crowd .
I shot at the orig 1000 yd range in Williamsport . My rifle was , is a 7 mm x300 Weatherby .
Current bullet design , and being as cheap as I am , I would suggest a 6.5 or 6 mm , fast tw of course , heavy bullet . While the 6.5 is good , I like you ,like to be diff . I'm a retired rifle smith ,so rebarrel is not a big deal . I've got about 16 diff 6.5 reamers , from necked down 460 Weatherby mags to 6.5 rem mags . I'm leaning on hot rodded 6 mm if I had to suggest one . I just bought a 6 x06 Ackley . That may be good , I'd probably go in a little short with the reamer and settle on a case a little longer than the 6 rem . Again I'm sorry .
