300 WIN MAG or 300 WSM for long range varmints

I'm not saying it's not going to work , I'm saying a lot of other cartridges exist that can shoot longer with less powder , less barrel wear , less recoil . Heck I could get out any number of rifles in 338 lap , 338 rem ultr mag Ack , 375 rumac, 50 BMG , but why ?
My body , my barrel ,my $ , it's a waste of all those .

If I was not retired , I would not be promoting another design . In hindsight I should encourage it , after all , it keeps the currently employed smiths , barrel makers , powder manuf ,etc making $$

Good luck , I gotta stop talking and get to the range , I'm late like always . Today it a couple of 22 rf at 300 yds ,

Hey Matt don't get me wrong I love 6MM calibers, I just have a leaning towards larger calibers.
Here is my 6mm family. From left to right 6BR, 243AI, 6X55Swede, 6-06AI, 6WSM, 6MachIV and 6RUM.

I do know a thing or two about sending a large caliber bullet over 4000FPS, here is my all time favorite.
It is a 338 edge with a 33' 12 twist on a Rem 700 action with a barrel nut instead of a shoulder.
It launches a 160gr Barnes TTSXs 4200fps+ and the 180gr TTSXs 4000fps+

Hey Jim, sorry I don't have any and don't know anyone willing to give there's up. Way to much fun,
I am contemplating buying a 30 cal 17 twist button. So a $400.00 cut rifle blank won't be they only option.

Dean
Hart offers an 18 twist button rifle barrel that is very accurate in 30BR

Dean, please expound upon the .22-06AI!
Are you shooting solids out of it?

Seems that when overbore reaches the point of obscene, bullet integrity becomes the limiting factor.
Thoughts?

That is why the twist rates are so high, to adjust for the obscene FPS. You can sent the bullet as fast as you want, you just can't "spin" the bullet that fast. it takes a minimum rpm to stabilize a bullet 200.000 rpm approx, and a max before it vaporizes 300.000 rpm. Most bullet makers agree 250.000 rpm approx is optimum. So lets take a 223 with an 8 twist and an 80gr bullet 2800 fps is typical so 2800 X 720 Div 8tw = 252.000 rpm. A 22-250 with the same 80gr and 9 twist 3200 fps typical 3200 X 720 Div 9tw = 256.000.

22-06AI 80gr Berger 4200fps so 4200 X 720 Div 12tw = 252.000 fps, it's funny you don't usually associate Retumbo with 22 cals.LOL They are both 30" long.

The 14 twist barrel I have been shooting 69gr sierra's, and will stabilize a 77gr Sierra due to there short bearing surface. Needless to say the numbers are in the stratosphere, a 53gr Vmax will exceed 5g without even flinching.

223 with a 80gr Berger and 22gr of powder beside a 22-06AI with a 80gr Berger and 66gr of powder. doesn't that just give you that warm and fuzzy feeling.LOL

True story, once I just cycled the bolt and the chuck keeled over and died.LOL

It has come to my attention that a lot of forum members, do not post there Ideas, views, experiences, ect on the main forum and have to resort to PM's. And It happens a lot for me to take the time to write this, Due to all the negative sometimes condescending remarks and fear of being ridiculed, as for me I don't give a cr@p because anything I post I have actually experienced and have done it repeatedly. It is a shame because a lot of good information is exchanged in those PM's, And that info just never makes it to to the forum members. I don't think they had this behavior in mind when they started this forum. I sincerely hope attitudes change, one can only hope.

I think alot is not said due to liabilities. If somebody blows up a savage using a hot load from a bat it could be bad for an author

I know a lot of you are wondering about barrel life, lets not kid ourselves it's lifespan is shorter than a 308.
This is how it works the first 500 rounds are match groupings, the next 300 are target groupings, and the last 200 are hunting groupings. The key is to never let the barrel heat up, and if you set back the barrel at 500 rounds you only have to take off 1/2 inch, if you wait until 1000 rounds then you have to take off an Inch. They are as good as new when they come back maybe even better because you have a fresh throat with the rifling already broken in. If you buy and have installed one of these barrels and intend on going to the range and punch paper, then one of these barrels is not for you it would be a waste. You can be sure if I pull the trigger with one of these there will be a carcass at they other end. But if you want to take shots that you never would have been able other wise, there is something to this that you just can't explain. You can be further away so they don't know your there, and if by chance you do not hit they animal in the perfect kill zone the hydrostatic shock "Red Mist" is so huge that you won't need a follow up shot. So in they end out of 1000 rounds of barrel life if end up with lets say 500 varmints, coyotes, ect what a bargain.

That is not my take from the conversations I have with forum members, from what I gather it has to do with not being smacked upside the head often enough, when they were being brought up when they were out of line. Either that or some just can't others pursuit of happiness, and are just miserable in the true sense of the word.

A guy named Todd that visits here recycled some of his stuff to me. He had built a 30/378 Weatherby and was shooting the 125g noslers at 4000, a coyote master blaster.

We designed a 25 caliber reamer bases off a short neck 257 Weatherby where a guy could neck down Winchester 264 WM brass or 7 RM brass. Also cut the freebore to zero on the reamer. This is a shooting son of a gun!

Five rifles built on the reamer shot the 100's at 3850 into bug holes with 26" sender tapers. Then a friend made a 30" barrel for chuck busting, and he got the 100's at 4000 fps into tiny groups at the sweet spot. This is a No Brainer wild cat that just works. When you run the 264 Win mag brass in the 257 Weatherby full length sizer, the double radius is formed perfectly...no kidding. R#22, Fed215's, 100g(pick one)shoot 3850 and the 115's are at 3600+, tiny groups.

I used mine as a coyote calling rifle, crow rifle, and deer rifle. I sighted in at 1/2" high at 200 and was 4" low at 300, which covered most of my killing distances.

Now were talking that is some cool stuff right there, I had one of those poor man Weatherbys also. Well actually it was a 257 WBY chamber that I just use to use 264 and 7mm brass, they were a bit short but with a few firings and some brass flow they would form to size But by then I would have to chuck them. My friends father a die hard Weatherby fan "use to wear the same style hat as ED" it piss him off when I did that, and said I was committing sacrilege for not using WBY brass.LOL
