300 SAUM Imp

Another sample with the 185 juggernaut..
Checked rifle a couple of days before going out and was avg 3011 FPS, after bore was fouled.
Couldn’t get a perfect range, for
whatever reason, but was reading between 363-378yds.
The shot was downhill so didn’t take enough out of the scope to account for that and hit about 3” higher than intended.
Bullet made typical entry wound and exited just below mid body. The deer was also slightly quartering too so caught liver & front of gut on the way out. The exit wound was just about a perfect circle that measured around 2 1/2”.
After the shot, she stood in the same spot for maybe 5 seconds and fell over.
I drug the deer away for a cleaner pic, but when I walked up to her, she had obviously expired from blood loss so this was a good sign that the bullet is doing its job.
Any bullet can seem like a winner if you shoot them high shoulder and mess with the central nervous system but I’m trying to keep it away from that area to see what it’s actually doing. So far, i’m very happy with the results and keep in mind that these southern deer are thin so the bullet is opening very well in that small amount of area it’s passing through.

I like how Jeff’s worst ES shot the best. And the best ES shot the worst. Call the scientist and math guys. We need a full write up and detailed article explaining how that isn’t possible.

I'll analize it and give a full report. I will even write a book and build a lab. I already know what the book will say. The hard part will be figuring out the other 95% of stuff to talk about to justify the money youd have to pay me.

Just got back from the NBRSA 600/1000 Nationals. For 600 LG - I tried the 300 SI LG with Berger 185 juggernauts to see how it would compete against the 6mm's. There were some pre-match questions as to whether this was a wise choice since I did have a 6mm ready to go for LG. What the heck - wanted to give it a try :).

My 300 SI HV barrel is on my Wheeler built LG BAT B w/magnum bolt. Comes in right at 16 pounds 15oz.

I think it did ok (red) in terms of group agg against the 6mm's. Here are the top 10 600 Yard 6-target LG group aggs:

For 1000 - Shot the 300 SI HG (26+ pounds) with the same barrel that won HG at last year's Nats (with vintage [early 2000's ??] dimpled bottom JLK 210s).

Have tested Berger 185 juggernauts, 208s, and 215s In my 300SS—-about the same. 185s grouped the best, although I need to slow them down with pressure at 3008fps. Know nothing about BR, but tempted to try it.

Thoughts on this cartridge for F-Open running the 185s Juggernauts that have been shooting very small for Alex and some others? Seems like it wouldn’t beat you up as bad as 200-215s in the WSM, and it may Agg better than than a 284/7-6.5 PRC with 180s.

Highly doubtful it will out agg 215's/200's/180's for LR Fclass.....Even at 3000fps it just gives up waaay to much to those other bullets out of WSM's and 7/6.5PRC's.

Agreed, 185g may very well out group or agg other bullets for “blind” quick strings of fire that long range bench rest venues accommodate but you toss in the equation of longer strings of fire that F- class requires over a longer period of time even if typical grouping ability slightly less , the raw BC has some built in advantage to less the good shooting decisions when placing shots. In bench rest we have found that bullets that have a lesser BC often will “group” cleaner and smaller but the caveat is the strings need to be handled differently. They still will group in the wind soundly but you will give up some hold or score do to lack of BC . It’s a fun pursuit to Polish a formula that takes us further…

Been tinkering around with another 300 SI barrel @Alex Wheeler chambered up for me. It's on my LRB BAT B LG. Took this barrel/rounds down to Nats back in April but didn't shoot it. Had a 600 match this past weekend so took the barrel out and the previously loaded rounds and shot 3 LG targets. Mirage was terrible - could barely make out the spotter disk during the sighter period.
