Question for Necking Down a 300 SAUM

I have a couple of questions for the experts here.... I am having Chris from Long Shot build me a 7mm SAUM with a .315 neck. I have some Nosler 300 SAUM im going to neck down, but need to know if i should fire form the 50 cases first before i turn the necks down to around .014. The reason im asking is that the Nosler 300 SAUM brass measures 1.997 long right now, and i believe that the 7mm SAUM drawing shows the length to be around 2.030 to 2.035... so, right now, am i looking at a false (neck shoulder junct.)?? Once i fire off a shell, wont that form the brass to my new chamber and give me a accurate neck shoulder junct. and overall length? and then turn the neck to .014?

Also, when i ran my first case through my .310 neck of my full length sizer die, the neck measures .315. is it springing back that much? If so, how do i fix that? Its a new Die that Forester bored out to .310.....so they say.....

Thanks for the help

My Nosler 300 SAUM brass necked down to 7mm with a 162 Amax measures .316, so if you fireform first you will need to use the Cream of Wheat method(.001" interference fit wouldn't be good). My reamer cuts a .318 neck for no-turn necks and case length for my reamer if 2.015" for a 2.000" trim length.
The issue with the FL die sounds odd since usually when necking down the 300 to 7mm the neck actually comes out smaller than the die diameter because of brass flow.

Hey Barry, Graff and sons has 4 boxes of Norma 300 Saum brass right now, but i will tell you why i went with just the 1 box of Nosler brass for now..... when i was ordering some things from Sinclair, they just ran out of the Norma saum brass and the guy I was talking to mentioned that Norma is coming out with 7mm Saum head stamp brass in the spring..... so i will do some load development with the nosler brass and then switch to the 7mm saum Norma brass when available. No Antelope yet.... That one you got looks pretty nice.... did you measure it yet?

Just measured the length of the 'goat' horns and he just barely made 14.25. Are you going to go over to the Malta area for your 'goat'?

It's surprising that FORSTER did not grind down the expander ball since you ordered the die for a tighter neck. Strange!! :)

And thanks for the heads-up on the new 7SAUM brass.

It doesnt look like im going to be able to hunt this year for Antelope... My tag was for 700 area though.... We are having the baby this next friday. So im going to have to stick close by
Turns out that im going to have to get a bushing neck sizer now. The chamber has already been reamed to a .313 neck. So i will need a .308 bushing and turn the necks to .013 thickness. I can still use the forester die to bump the shoulder back when needed....

For whats it's worth I'm in the middle of a similar project and after reading the previous post regarding Sinclairs rumor about Normas' plan to produce 7mm rsaum brass I decided to drop them (Norma) an e-mail and ask them if it was true. Got an answer back from a Mr. Ake Nillson on Nov. 2, 2010 and it stated :

Dear Mr. King (that's me)

We probably will make just cases, to Nosler sometimes in spring -- date too early to say.The neck wall usually on our cases is 0.30 to 0.33mm (0.0118" to 0,0129") this in actual calibre.

Those were his exact words and before anyone comments on my grammar or spelling that is the exact way his e-mail response to me was worded, and no I'm not making light of his spelling either. My reason for asking about the neck thickness was so that I could have my reamer cut to work with this brass in the future. So I guess we'll all have to just wait and see for this brass.

BigKev;
Thanks much for doing the leg work and getting this info from the horse's mouth. Now, if it only holds true.
Thanks again.
Barry

The remington 7mm saum brass i have used is pretty average (big weight variations between cases per bag of 50) and no where near the the neck wall thickness consistency of norma brass. Also have struck the odd piece that had to be tossed (torn necks). Once sorted and prepped (weighed into batches with 2gr variation, flash hole deburred, neck turned, pocket uniformed, trimmed), it seems OK. if Norma started selling 7mm saum brass I'd buy some in a heartbeat......
