Thoughts Please 7mm Saum

I bought a 7mm Saum reamer in the classifieds, and a 32" finish length Brux 8.5 twist is here as well. I have a 7mm throater and will set it up proper for 180/184 bullets. My question is there a powder primer combination that has stood out working well for you guys? I know some guys who hunt with this round and H414 is a hammer with lighter bullets. I have most recommended powders on hand for 300 WSM and hope they are close to same for the Saum. Thanks!

Special thank you goes out to Dubbo, who I got the reamer from, and a link to ADG brass and to Preacher for his kind offer and allowed me to purchase enough ADG brass to get me off the ground. This is truly a great place, thank you Mr. Moderator for all your hard work too!

I had 2 for a while. Long action loved 180s and H-1000, short action with 168s and 4831sc. Still have the short Action. Brass was the shortcoming when I was shooting it. ADG should help with that issue. Remington brass prepped is good stuff. (I still have 300 pieces of virgin stuff) Norma 300 SAUM brass necked down was 2nd best. Very accurate round.

My combination with 7 saum shoots very well with H1000, S/B primer, and 180 hyb or 162 ELDM. This may not be best out there, but gives great performance when shooting 5 shot groups. Others that post on here will have valuable info as well, especially those shooting 1,000 yd competition.

H4350 is usually really tough to beat in the 7 SAUM. H4831SC will be a close 2nd. Mine is actually a 7 SAUM 35° Imp and I use 8.5-twists and shoot the 184 Hybrid. It shoots really good around 2880 fps. Good call on getting ADG brass. I was about ready to abandon the 7 SAUM if all I had to use was Norma brass. It’s part of the reason I changed the shoulder angle to 35° to help stop the flow of brass into the neck. The other problem with the Norma brass was only getting 3 or 4 firings and the primer pockets were shot. Here’s the last 20 shots for competition at 1000 with mine last fall using H4350 and the 184 Hybrid:

H4350 (AR2209) is almost the default choice here in Australia for the 180’s. It just works!!

4831SC or RE23 would be worth trying as well.

If barrel life is a priority then I would say that H4831sc or H1000 will be worth trying, but if outright accuracy at long range, (along with low ES/SD) is your main concern, then H4350 is what most of the higher end competitors would be using for long range competition. You might squeeze out a tad more velocity with H4831sc or H1000 but H4350 squeezes out more Xs.

And the other point to note is if you are worried about barrel life then a SAUM isn't for you!

Does anyone have a source for RE23 with 180 grain bullets? I bought a couple of Lbs but can’t find any data to start a load with.

I'm in the same boat. Would like to hear suggested starting loads for H4350, H4831sc, and H1000.

Velocities with 180 and 184 is helpful as well. 2880 I saw with 184, with the improved case. I got my barrel spun up, ready to roll!

56.0gr of H4350 under a 180hybrid (give or take) would normally see you somewhere in the low to mid 2900’s in most barrels.

Having said that I have a new Kreiger that is significantly faster then a Bartlein of the same twist and same reamer with 55.8gr producing 2970fps, so as always start low and work up.
Maybe 54.5 or even 54.0 to get a baseline.

with RE23 try starting around 56 and work up towards 58

My starting load for a new barrel with 180 Hybrids and Fed 215 blu box primers was 52.50 of H4350 2825 avg
After it was broke in 53.70 @ 2880 avg shot pretty well @ eighteen off.
All in a 30” Bartlein if memory serves me correctly.

H4831SC same combo.
59.0 2889 avg
59.5 2915 avg

H1000 same combo but 180 JLK
58.0 2640 avg
61.70 2810 avg
I took it up to 62.5 for 2910 avg

I also did R25 started at 57.70 with an asterisk at 58.40 ? I went as high as 59.80 no other data other than I tried it, sorry. Always went back to 4350, then tweaked fine powder chg, primers and neck tension. Just my $ .02

Keep in mind I changed the shoulder angle slightly to 35 degrees, but 56.0 gr. H4350 gives me ~2880 fps out of a 28.5" barrel. I only tested it up to 56.5 gr. and didn't hit pressure but I'm betting it's close. I started down at 54.0, which was ~2785 fps.

I also tried H4831SC and started at 59.0 (~2775 fps) and worked up to 62.0 (~2970 fps) and hadn't hit pressure signs there either, but I'm betting that was close too.

All this was done with ADG brass, CCI BR-2 primers, and 184 Hybrids .015" in the lands.

I have (2) 7 Saum barrels 24" and 28". They are both hunting rifles and i am trying to find the fastest load possible for the 180's. It's not a big surprise that a faster powder like H4350 would be slower, but more accurate. I run 63-64.5 grains of H1000 in mine for 2900-2980. But i run 3 shot groups when testing.
