300 Norma Mag

I've had several 300RUM's and I don't think they are as accurate plus the loaded rounds are super long. My 300 Norma Imp has a .235" throat (a bit short to be dedicated just to 230's but I wanted to be able to shoot 215's too) and my OAL is only 3.608 at .007" off. The same throat in a RUM is .350" longer. That would be 3.958" or barely able to fit in a Wyatt super long box. They are almost identical capacity but I have much better brass because I use Lapua made 423 Dakota brass. I have about 1300 rounds of it so I'm good for my life time. I also have 10 reloads on a few of them that were run from 3045fps to almost 3175fps with 230's and the primer pockets are like new. I'm sure at 3045fps it will easily go 20 reload with proper annealing and it wouldn't surprise me if it went 30-40 reloads.

I have a reamer for a 7-338 Norma Imp with a bore rider throat set up for 195's too. It should easily push 195's 3200fps in a 28" barrel. Once hunting season ends I'll build it and see what it will do for sure.

No deigning the Rum is a long cartridge and pushes the 4" mark. Other than that I have no issues with my norma or nosler brass it's really good. and Accuracy is not a factory I have had rum's that would shoot with my bench guns if you can deal with the recoil.

Ok..... I hate to hijack this thread but can you guys explain how or why the 300 Norma outclasses the 300 WM & the 300 WSM? I have seen picture of the 300 Norma next to a 300 WM and the WM looks bigger.?.? What is the 300 Norma based off of? What are the benefits other than the Norma isn't belted? Is it more inherently accurate? I like big stuff sometimes and I have a 338 EDGE, a 338 Lapua and a 338 RUM and a 300 WSM..... now you guys have me curious. Thanks I advance.

The 300 NormaMag is more fat than the 300winmag and has about 10gr more capacity.

100 fps over the 300winmag is hardly a big improvement.

Folk just wanna be different and the 300 NormaMag is new and cool. Nothing wrong with that.

It's a shortened 338 Lapua with the body taper taken out, Originally designed as a 338, basically take .225" inch off the Lapua remove the body taper and seat a 300 SMK out where it belongs and you are at 3.6" More efficient use of space designed to run in a Rem. action without extended mags.

That makes sense but how does the 338 version compare ballistically to a 338 Lapua?

How hard is it to form 300NM from the 423 Dakota brass?

If you don't try to make a standard 300 Norma run as fast as a Improved version then the brass will last a while. Running a 230 over 3000fps in a standard 300 Norma will mean really short brass life. My improved is insanely accurate at 3045fps with 230's and it's loafing along at that speed. I can run well over 3100fps but the accuracy goes to .5 MOA or more and the brass life suffers.

Now that is good to know....

I'm bringing this thread back to life. Do you uniform the primer pockets? thank you

I do uniform primer pockets, deburr flash holes, and turn necks. It's more work but I think it's worth it and if your brass last a long time 100 rounds might be all you have to do for the life of the barrel.
