ABM 230's in 300 win mag

Gents,

I'm building a 300 win mag and wondering about the ABM 230's loaded for that round. My barrel is going to be a Bartlein 5R 10 twist at 28" plus muzzle brake. I'd like to ring steel past 1000 yards and besides that, I just want a 300 win mag. Also considering the Federal match load with 190 SMK's.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I'd go with a 1:9 twist so that you can shoot slow and fast loads with full stability. The 1:9 should stabilize it down to about 2200fps MV. You should be able to ring steel at a mile with a 300 win-mag and 230gr hybrids starting at 2800-3000fps. I think you'll want to get the blank chambered for the 300 winmag tactical match chamber if you want to use pre-built rounds. If you want to reload, you'll definitely get more accuracy (tight control, tuned to your gun) and probably more speed (longer throat possible, more powder, slower powder, fire-formed brass, etc...).

Scarface,
Jason T gave you accurate advice. Get the 1-9" twist barrel for your 300 WM if you are going out past 1000 yards. The 230 OTM AND 230 TARGET HYBRID have OPTIMAL ( based on 59 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level) twist rates of 1-9" If you want to confirm that the 1-10" is correct for your needs. Go to the BERGER BULLET website and access the TWIST RATE CALCULATOR under the BALLISTICS tab in the drop down. Be sure to enter the correct altitude(s). Use the lowest altitude as your baseline to decide between the 1-9 or 1-10 twist rate.

I have a Surgeon Scalpel in 300WM. The barrel is a 26" Kreiger 1 in 10 twist and it shoots the 230 great. I can pretty easily hammer steel out to 1250 (as far as I've tried). My 230 OTM leaves the barrel at 2850 FPS. A stout load but not overly hard on brass (which is still hard to find).

I will point out, based on my previous post, that I am shooting the 230 OTM and that is a little different shape from the Hybrid 230. Confusing but Berger calls them OTM Hybrid and Hybrid and the BCs are slightly different. All I know is the OTM is made to work with detachable magazines.

Shoot4fun,

I noticed that myself when I went to the Berger website. I will be using the hinged floor plate option on this build to make it more palatable to the Mrs.

Started spending money on this beauty queen today. Rem700 action, manners T-5A, and Bartlein 5R. Bullets.com is where I got my stock and barrel - Shiraz is one of very few with Bartlein barrels in stock. Got my action from a gent on this forum.

Stand by for target pics in a few months. Thanks for the replies, all.
