300 Norma Improved

Heres a tack driving 300 Norma improved Brandon Luke picked up on Thursday. Test group measured .154” @ 100 yds w factory ABM 230 gr ammo. I gave him a quick tutorial on shooting the rifle off a bipod and how to manage recoil to be able to shoot consistently tiny groups with it. I then let him shoot some steel at 400 yds with factory ammo and it shot well under half moa vertical with his first shots down the rifle, all while fireforming brass.

Rifle has a:
Kelbly atlas action
Manners eh1 in swamp camo
Proof Research Carbon sendero 9.0 tw
Self timing 5 port “Muscle” brake
Triggertech Diamond trigger
Hawkins bdl hinged floor plate
Nightforce NXS bedded into a set of Nightforce rings.

BTW...I love that one too !!!

I didn't know Peterson released their 2nd batch yet. Where did you find it? Let me know when ya need that Proof. I have a ton of those instock for $730 shipped. If a guy orders one I knock $30 off one of my brakes if they buy it with the barrel.
Good to know the 9 twist shoots the 230s so well. I figured I'd need an 8 twist for them.

Dont need an 8 twist for Berger 230s, but extra twist might help out if you plan on shooting ELR. If you want to shoot the Sierra 230s, they recommend a 1 in 8" twist minimum.

You don’t need a 8 twist for the 230SMK. I’m running them at 2900fps out of a 1-9 twist and they shoot excellent. If memory serves me right according to my twist calc’s at 2800 they need 1-9.24 and at 3000 like 1-9.52. Again going off of memory. So I did a 9 twist. The 230SMK and the 225 ELD-Ms both shoot excellent.

Check out this sexy 300 Norma improved that just shipped out to Thomas White. 3 shot group at 100 yds off the bipod while fireforming brass w factory ABM ammo measured .214".
It has a:
Lone Peak Fuzion ti action
Manners eh5
Proof Research sendero contour barrel
Self timing 5 port “Muscle” brake
Triggertech Diamond trigger
Hawkins bdl hinged floor plate
Kahles k525 bedded into a set of Nightforce rings.

Dont shoot the messenger. I'm just stating what Sierra recommends. I'm sure their recommendation is for stability through the transonic zone at ELR when shooting at sea level with all 30 cal cartridges including cases that yield slower speeds than the 300 Norma. Higher elevations and higher speeds may paint a different picture for how the bullet stabilizes. Get a person shooting it out if a short barrel 308 win and they probably better have a 1 in 8" twist...

Not shooting the messenger at all. So all is cool!

They probably based the 8 twist on a couple of things. One I’ll guess not the average guy being able to push them 2800 let alone 3000fps. If a FTR guy was going to try them probably at 2600 or even less velocity.

At less velocity they will need faster than a 1-9 and most button barrel makers don’t do twists rates in between.

That and probably factoring in bc numbers etc...they recommended a 1-8 twist.

Kinda like the twist rate for .224s and 90s is 6-7 typically when an 8 will do in some cases using the bigger case cartridges rather than the .223.

Not wanting to side track this thread but right now I'm very interested in doing a 338 norma improved....So Ryan do you possibly have a print for an improved 338 Norma using Lapua brass and 300gr Bergers?

I know Alex Wheeler has a 338 Norma improved reamer. Not sure if he has used it yet. It was going to be for 250 EH. If you run some numbers, it takes some distance for the 300 to take over. But I love me some 300 grain Elite Hunters.

Who makes dies for this??

I had Whidden make me a custom click adjustable bushing FL sizing die, then I used a Wilson micrometer blank seating die with VLD stem and reamed it out with my chamber reamer. Makes very precise ammo. Never have to worry about runout on the brass or bullets.

Stop posting this stuff!!! You're gonna cost me a bunch of money when I am forced to go out and buy some ABM ammo to try! LOL! ;) I havent shot factory ammo out of a rifle in many years

Im having Warner and Hornady make my dies for me now. I had a company make a bunch of dies for me and they were all off spec. Wouldn't size the body diameter more than a half thou. My 4x fired brass was measured with optical comparators by JGS and Warner Tool and die and they both said my brass was only one tenth of a thou/.0001 from my reamer print. The company that messed the dies up claimed my brass was .0025 undersized which is why their dies didn't size my brass. I told them they need to fire the guy that measures stuff in their shop since myself, JGS and Warner measured it and its essentially perfect. I bought some pin gauges, measured the inside of their dies, and proved them wrong and that their dies were junk. Theyre giving a refund to all customers who have my dies. Customers that have the first batch of dies will get free replacements.

I ran into a smokin deal on the ABM ammo and bought 4,000 rounds of it. It was on clearance pricing and was loaded with Lapua brass. However I was surprised at how many rounds were messed up. A bunch of the bullet tips are deformed. A few of the necks are flared out and won't chamber. And one round is beyond messed up, pic included. However the ES is really good on the 230 gr ABM ammo. Last rifle I test fired w it last week had an es of like 10 for 7 shots. maybe I just got lucky on that string. I was just disappointed in the overall quality given the retail price of almost $5 a shot. Had I bought them at retail I would have returned them. However I bought it to test rifles with and have lapua brass for customers rifles.

They must have made that round for snipers to shoot around corners from cover. Lol! :D
