30* 500 yard 6 Dasher testing today

Got up early this morning and hit the range to do some testing on a new Barrel Tim Claunch chambered for me.

Since I mentioned Tim he had talked me into giving RL-15 another try so that's what I did. I set out with 20 rounds loaded at +.011 into the lands using 32.0 grains of RL-22 with a CCI 400 primer with a 105 Berger VLD
These 20 rounds were to find my optimum seating depth.
The morning started off hazy and not being able to see my bullet holes on the white cardboard I shot my first 3 shots and drove down range to see where impact was. I was low 3 clicks and right 2 clicks so I made my adjustments and based on the first three shots I began the seating depth by seating loaded rounds in .003 on each session of 3 shots further away from the lands.
By the time I had shot up my test loads I drove down did an observation of the target and seating depths and there were 2 promising depths, one was .001 into the lands and the other .005 off the lands. So I chose the .005 off and went back to the firing line and began seating all my other test loads at that seating depth.

The rifle got a good cleaning and then a few fouler and sighter shots and I began testing a higher powder charge of 32.5 grains and also I had two other sets of loads of 32.0 and 32.5 grains of RL-15 with the CCI 450 primers.
By the time I had gotten a few rounds fired to foul the barrel and get a new zero I noticed the mirage was just miserable so I cranked the 15-55 NF back to 45x and looked and I was still unable to make out the 1" orange aiming circle. So I backed it on off until the picture cleared up and I began the test.

Here's what the morning looked like at 500 yards setup at 6:30 am it was a bit hazy then.

Now here's my target testing after the initial seating depth test. Top left is the 32.5 grain charge with the CCI 400, bottom two from left to right is 32.0 and 32.5 with the CCI450

And here's the 32.5 group size using the CCI450

Did I mention the mirage was miserable during this test? If not I'll say it. It was so bad I was afraid to even go look to see what mess I had down range.

Also prior to this test the barrel only had 13 rounds fired thru it.

Thanks for reading and comments welcomed...... Oh and I hate the cold.......

Nice !! Glad you got to shoot. I use the 32.5 w/ 450's myself. I'm hoping to back mine down to 32 with the CCI 450 primer and try it again. Seems my brother has his set to 32, and groups better than mine.

Thanks Gabe,

I'm sure as the temps rise I'll have to tweak on the load a bit. But at least for now I'm close.

My next tweak will be seating depth +.001 and -.001 from where I'm at right now. Then I'll test once more as temps rise with powder charges in .2 grain increments from 32.2-32.6

Oh that bottom right target has four shots in case folks are wondering, there's 2 nearly in one hole.

Tell us about your rest set up and maybe another picture of it from the side. It looks very slick!!!

Basically it's a template I built to fit my front rest and bag. I set it up so I can remove the plate in the middle and be legal in IBS matches. I wanted something I could put my rest and bag in and sit my Rifle and move it all as one piece to align it to my target and still keep everything square and tracking true.

All it is, is 48" x 14 or 16" x3/4" shelving material. I laid it out so everything works off center line and then I cut and routed it out to fit the rest plate and rear bag snugly. The plate is 3/16 thick and I routed out the template to fit the plate snug and flush. I drilled the holes in plate and then set it into the template and drilled thru and put brass wood inserts in to screw the plate down secure to.

Very Nice, great idea!!! Who makes the modified base that your JJ rest is mounted to?

That's actually a Hart 1000 yard plate for their rest. I robbed it off my Hart setup to use in the JJ. I added it solely for weight. I felt the JJ just wasn't heavy enough to my likings.

Question, James isn't that considered capturing the rear bag? If it is then the rear part would be against the rules for LG.

James,

Just cautious about 4 shot groups. Why 4 and not 3 or 5. Just trying to learn something here. Great shooting bye the way.:)

Thanks, Paul

Shooting 4 allows me a better chance see what's going on to be honest. I could do 5 and I will once I get closer to temps I rather tune in besides 30* outside. Now I'm close and have a good idea what to do when it does warm up

No it isn't. The rear section can float around on the table. To capture the rear bag would mean to keep it from moving in any direction. My setup you can still slide and twist the bag if you desire. But that defeats purpose of using the template to keep it all square if someone wishes to change the bag position

Nice shooting James, I tend to also do 4 shot groups mainly because I just want an alibi during initial testing then move on to 5 shot groups (its because I'm cheap and don't want to waste another shot during testing). That damn dasher is nice, I've had 3 and wondered why I ever strayed because I just keep coming back to it for the next build.

Very nice James, please tell us about your rifle, what beautiful stock is that?

The action is a Bat MB barrel is a brux 1/8 twist chamberd in a 6 Dasher with a .268 neck. The stock is one of Terry Leonard's redwood with laminated carbon fiber.
