25x47 Lapua

Well my 25x47 Lapua has arrived and it didn’t take long to get started with this one. Was pretty eager to try a x47 Lapua for a few years now. I’m new to the cartridge, actually new to this family of cartridges. I am planning on trying rl16, h4350, varget, n150 and possibly n140 to get some information on this caliber.

To break in the barrel I started with rl16. I picked a random charge of 37.5gr behind hornady 134gr eldm and the results were staggering. I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten lucky like this.

First 3 shots out of the barrel

I didn’t have a chrony that day so I threw up a target at 740 yards and dialed what I thought they might be running and held straight up hoping to find splash for elevation and wind. It was easy to spot trace and easy to spot the splash. I made the correction and sent 4 quickly to just make sure I got the call right and had a .4 moa group at 740 yards. Realizing the potential I ran home and loaded the remaining with the same charge to just break the barrel in and once fire some brass. Upon return a few hours later I shot this cold bore 740 yard group then moved to 600 for a nice 5 shot group

I went on to shoot a long range ladder test the following down IMG_1633.jpeg

A little pressed for time I loaded 5 rounds for both the low and middle potential node and shot 5 shot groups over the Chrony at 100 yards before having to go pick up the kids. First node shot 2700.2 fps with an sd of 5 and es of 13.3. And the middle node shot 2781.3 with an sd of 2.3 and an es of 6.3.Ballistic-X-Export-2024-11-15 17:50:27.633764.png

I have loaded the upper potential node as well and will shoot it at 100 and then shoot all 3 at 600 yards to confirm.

I am loading up ladders of rl16, n150 and varget with the Berger 135’s to hopefully shoot next week.

I'll be watching your post closely and hoping for continued success. I've got the makings for a faux, original Howa Mountain Rifle - OEM Banser stock, lightweight close-copy contour 257 blank- originally planned to do this as a 250 Sav but now conflicted as to the 25 X 47 - so far you're really kickin' ass - as the Aussies say "Good on ya, Mate!"

That’s sounds like an awesome build too! Let us know what you decided!

Thanks for posting and great caliber choice. the X47 case is a favorite of mine. have a 6x47 and 6.5x47 reamer and have built guns in both. Never dissapoints with either caliber. Would like a 22 and 25x47 reamer but may never happen. Please keep posting results
I wanted a 6.5x47 Lapua for my first build but was advised against it as I was new to reloading at the time and most recommended the 6.5 creed (right when it was introduced) or the 260 rem. I ended up with a 260 and while it shot amazing I never loved it as I wanted the 6.5x47 and regretted not doing it.

I think a lot of us have been down that road. While opinions and research are certainly good for consideration I think sometimes we are better off just listening to our gut and doing what we are excited about. That may be a mistake at times but so is listening to a lot of opinions, too many can muddy the waters and some of those opinions are probably just repeating what has been read or heard, others are based on experience. It can be hard to sort out.

I’ll ask opinions, I do that quite a bit and I certainly get some good advice when I do, some bad too. In the end I’ve learned to build what I want, sometimes the advice and opinions change that and some times they don’t. I’m glad you had what you wanted built, my own opinion is the more you shoot it the more your gonna like it too. Sweet little cartridge.

100% this was 10-12 years ago and I compromised on a few things at the time. Really wanted a defiance but for a stiller, really wanted a 6.5x47 Lapua but was brand new to reloading so the argument was made by my shooting buddy, a competent f-class shooter at my range and my smiths so it was hard not to change at that point. It was one of the most accurate rifles I ever built but I just always felt like I should have gone with my gut. I’ve built a ton of rifles since and still never added a x47 to the line up.

When this came up I was debating between the 25gt or 25x47 Lapua and I figured I had to finally do it. Always built something else
