.243W Copper in Throat.

Anybody had an excessive build up of copper deposits in the throat of their .243W causing an increase in pressure ?

How often do you clean your barrel? And WHAT do you use for cleaning?

It is rare that you get copper build up in the throat...that is were you usually get carbon build up. Copper generally builds up towards the end of the barrel.

I use Iosso for carbon fouling and Sweets 7.62 or Patch Out for copper.

Take care,Stan

I have settled on brushing with Shooter`s Choice for carbon and Barne`s CR10 for copper finished up with Butchs Bore Shine to remove the ammonia and protect the bore. Don`t need to brush the CR10. Used Sweets back in the 1980`s on the Canadian Army ranges but the formula changed from thin and runny to very thick and sticky so switched to CR10. Don`t leave the ammonia-based copper removers such as CR10 or Sweets in your bore for very long. And make sure you thoroughly remove the ammonia with Butchs or some such.

I use KG 12 for copper from KG coatings. There is nothing like it out there . Only thing I don't like about it is you won't see blue patches as you clean ...it just removes the copper but doesn't turn the patch blue while it is doing it .

Just a bit more info.

Barrel has had 389 rounds through it. It was run in as per manufacturers specifications. Mostly 100 grain Nosler Partitions over 40.5 grains of RE-19. Rifle is cleaned every 10-30 rounds with Sweets and Hoppes No.9 then oiled. It is patched dry before shooting.

I may not have cleaned the throat as much as the rest of the barrel.

I am now scrubbing it with Nylon brushes, the above solvents and also Break Free foam cleaner.

I use KG 12 for the copper. As Eggman said, there is nothing like it out there! I have used most copper solvents over the years, and nothing even comes close to KG 12. I use the KG carbon remover first, the KG 12, and if needed I will use a bit of a KG product that is very similar to Remington 40x. I always inspect my bores with a Hawkeye borescope before putting away.

I'll have a look for KG 12 next time I'm shopping. I don't know if it is available here in OZ.

You never know your luck in a small country town though.
