223AI for PD's - Ideal twist rate?

Got my 6X45 Upper and accy's sold today for $800 and was watching an auction on Gunbroker for a gun I really wanted that ended today and low and behold I was able to get it for $765! So now I have my donor rifle for my .223AI build. 8)

It's this one ........ http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12VLPDBM in a 7 twist.

Might just pull the barrel off and sell it and order an 8 twist barrel, might try and shoot it for a while as is, might have my smith ream it to AI?

Hmmmmmm.............decisions, decisions.

This thread is slightly old, but CatShooter makes some valid points. A lot of you folks got money to spare, more power to you, a lot more of us don't. One thing not taken into account frequently is total per rd cost *including* barrel wear. On the known barrel burners (22-250 etc.) barrel wear can easily exceed the per rd cost of ALL OTHER components combined. If you're only going to get 5-6 reloads on a case, it better be cheap (+1 for 223 based). 6BR is actually pretty cost-effective *if* you don't lay down on a huge amount of cases, they're good for a whole lotta reloads. Speed (with relatively low barrel wear) counts. Terminal performance counts. Flat trajectory, PBR to 325 yds or so counts. Per rd bullet cost counts. Not having to scrub barrels after 50 rds because it starts tearing jackets or not shooting straight counts. Not having to trim 1000 cases every other firing counts. A little less wind drift DOES NOT count- its wind, you don't know exactly what it is till you see the dirt fly, make an adjustment. Wildcats- Fireforming multiple hundreds of cases COW or paper is for the birds- pick out one that shoots really good with reasonable velocity (usually better than the parent) fireforming and go kill PD's. Low recoil calibers rock, see it all. Figure out your fun per dollar line and stay below it.

P.S.- 17HMR is a ton 'o fun to 200 yds when you're in an area they've never been shot at, and ain't shy, wind and all, running shots at 75-125 yds with a 4ft lead.

its been a while since I've terrorized the PD fields.. (I shoot mainly RGS these days) but if I was building a new LR 223AI, I would probably pick a 1-10 twist barrel, or with another 1-12. (current) my first choices for bullets would be the 53Gvmax or a 60Vmax / 60NBT. I wouldn't go heavier than 60G. I'm currently using the 53Vmax. I don't shoot much past 350 on RGS, as they are about 50-60% the size of a PD.

I have not had much luck with the heavier pills, and getting the required expansion. IMHO, if your not giving PD's frequent flyer miles, then you need to change something. choose the bullet first, and everything else will fall into place.

I probably shoot more p-dogs (5-8k year round) than 90% of you all and my go to bullet is the 50g vmax in my 1/9" Savage .223 build. I see no reason for anything past the 55g bullet. Plant your shots with the wind or straight into it.
I know that didn't help anyone most likely...:)
