22 BR for mid range dogs what twist rate???

I'm an equal opportunity shooter. At 300-500 yds, I miss just as many due to elevation as I do wind.... It wouldn't make sense for me to try to run a 62gr from a 223. I wouldn't make up enough in wind drift to offset my elevation misses. With a bigger case like a BR or ARC, the 62gr doesn't give up hardly anything in elevation to the lighter bullets, but it gains a lot in the wind department. It would be neat to see how fast a person could push it accurately from a 22 CM, 22XC, or 22x47 (or even a 22-250 for that matter) and then see how it would compare at that speed to something in the 80-90gr range from the same cartridge. That's a topic for a different thread though...

Sample size of one (me), but I have not been able to get the 62 ELD-VT to shoot in two 22 CMs… nothing under .5 MOA. I’ve tried several powders, depths and primers. And both barrels like almost everything else. I have been able to get it to shoot in one of my 22 ARCs (not my custom barrel), it was the Howa mini barreled action. What’s even odder for me, is it was with CFE 223, which is another story in and of itself as I can’t get CFE to shoot near as good as a half dozen other powders, except in that Howa 22 ARC… with 62 ELD-VT.
I tried a bunch of combos on the 62 ELD-VT in 223 rem & AI without any success at all. I believe it needs to pushed much harder than 223 mv.
I do like the idea of 62 gr ELD-VT for mid distances, but 95% of my pdogs & ground squirrels are within 300 yards, maybe even more.
I always do my 22 BRs in 12-14 twist, but might try my next one @ 8T after reading this thread. Thanks for the idea. Aaron

I haven't tried loading it in anything yet (still saving my pennies for the 22BR), but it seems like the 69gr ELD-VT needs the right amount of twist and FB in order to shoot well, and there aren't very many factory/standard chambers and barrels that check both of those boxes. I've read of a few people who've shot them well out of a 223 barrel that was throated specifically for that bullet, and it seems like there are a number of guys shooting them well out of an 8T 22BR and 22ARC barrels. I'm a little surprised that the 22CM struggles with it, but since it often struggles with accuracy above 3500fps, and the 22 ARC and BR can comfortably push it at that speed, it does make sense that it might be hard to find a powder that would fill enough of the CM's case volume without exceeding that speed. I still wish Hdy would shove a mandrel down inside the projectile and swage some of that lead up into the nose. Maybe they tried and it didn't work for one reason or another, but it sure seams like it would make the bullet easier to stabilize at various speeds. Its not like there aren't multiple 22 cal varmint cartridges that push 62gr pills well over 3500 fps or anything....

I got out yesterday thinking I’d give the 22 CM one more chance with the 62 ELD-VT as I’ve got 32 lbs of N555 I’m not shooting right now that I bought for my Fclass rifle… this should’ve left the most case fill with 62 ELD-VT… in my 22” 8T SAAMI chamber I got to 3,900 MV before pressure but groups were all terrible… like 3” pure verticle… I’m done trying the 62 in 22CM.

I’m picking up my new 22BR barrel today… 18” .025” fb 12T, which wouldn’t stabilize the 62 eld regardless. Looks like another candidate for 50-55 gr consistency… one day I’ll find a home for all these 62s…

So I have not been able to decide which twist rate to use. I plan to build a 22 BR for mid range prairie dogs. I have a 20 Killer Bee and a 222 Remington for close work and a 6 BR 8 twist for long work. Need to decide on twist rate for the 200-400 yard shots. Would like to hear others experience and preference for this task. I plan to get a barrel from the Urban Rifleman. I’ve thought about an 8 twist to run the 60 ELD-VT but concerned about pigeon holing myself. Thanks in advance for the experience and opinions.

I have 13 and 14 twists
they shoot 55 grainers with precision out to 600 yds
800 yds with little wind
they are fast, like 3800 fps so punch through the yardage well

if it were me in your boat
I would do a 10 twist and be able to use the Sierra 69 TMK but still be able to use the cheaper 50 and 55 grainers also
