223 ISSF Project

My space gun has one five gallon bucket of brass through it. That's about 5k. Never shot anything but moly. I gave the 7.7 Kreiger the barrel a good scrubbing with Flitz and the barrel looked great. I took it to the range and shot a bunch of 1/4 inch'sh three shot groups. Still shoots incredibly well.

I have a 223 Ackley Remington barrel that probably has MORE than 5k on it. Same story.

So, no. No ill effects. I moly because it has always worked great. If it did something negative I wouldn't be using it after 30 years.

Moly bashing threads are second only to barrel cleaning threads. Like a plague. IMHO.
My results mirror this exactly. Not having to clean as often is a huge bonus in a long range coyote hunting rifle. Was to me anyways.

I did have one other addition. I asked Tubb why he stopped using moly and went to HBN. As many know he was the moly coated for Sierra. He said that they had some issue with cold bore shots going low.

So, I kept my eye out for that. Not only have I NOT seen that, in addition, using my cleaning method, and wet coated moly, I have not even seen any fouling shot fliers.

This is of course using wet coated bullets which (in my opinion) are much cleaner. And there is no wax. Which is not needed.

I have what is suppose to be a 100 freebore and have been loading at 2.425 OAL. and have had outstanding results. This was 20 thou off jam. That is with the 77 TMK.

I started using your wet method a few years back. I really like it.

Can you share your cleaning method?

1. Wash barrel with several patches of Boretech Eliminator. Let sit for at least 30 minutes.
2. Wet patch with Flitz barrel cleaner. One down and back stroke for every shot fired minimum. Focus on area from chamber throat to 12 inches in front of the throat. Ten strokes down and back per patch.
3. Wet patch until clear with Birchwood Casey Gun Cleaner.
4. Wash chamber with Birchwood Casey gun Cleaner.

Done.

They shot 3/8" moa or better @ 100yd for me when testing seating depth from 0.005" off to 0.03" off...

So, for 60 shots you'd do step 2 six times?

You work harder than I want to!

I took one of my stepsons friends shooting. He has NEVER shot a precision rifle.

This is the 223 load 22.5 AR COMP with the 80 smk. These were run on my Hornady PROGESSIVE.

All the groups he shot.

This is a 7 shot group.

Without that one dropped shot that would have been less than .25".

This is my progressive. It's not fancy. Hornady LNL number 451 ever made.

As far as I can tell, the progressive made ammo shoot the same as the RCBS scale and Wilson seater made ammo with the WCC brass.

Still haven't shot a load workup. Still using the first seating depth and the two charges of AR COMP. 22.5 and 23.5.
