223 bolt rifle with 1/8 twist with 55 gr bullets ?

Looks more like an over spun exploding projectile.
Really nice catch if it is. :)

There are only two X's on that target as I was only shooting two groups deciding between two seating depths that day. When I hung the target I put an extra push pin up in that corner for a point of aim for my fouler. 1st fouler shot went 1/2-3/4" low. The second shot hit the push pin, and made that hole. So what you see is full steam a 55gr Hornady sp vs a chartreuse push pin and 1" of backboards. The target had plastic shards embedded around that hole, but they fell off on the way home.

8 is significant overkill and not ideal, but with good bullets it will be capable of shooting well. Generally, you want the slowest twist that will adequately stabilize a bullet. More than that will degrade accuracy.

The 69 gr smk shoots excellent in my Tikka but when a local gun shop went out of business I bought a boat load of the 55 gr Hornady SP's for a very cheap p[rice. They shoot great out of my Colt match competition with 20" 1/9 twist. I just wanted to see what the consensus is about shooting them in my 24" 1/8 Tikka varmint rifle
