222 mag looking for a starting point

I tried benchmark and it was ok in mine however h4198 23.8-24gr was better and I found 2015 to have the lowest es and sd shooting very tight bug holes. all in a 700 12 twist 26 inch factory bbl with Hart doing the rechamber/crown - r/p brass and 7 1/2 primers

velocities in the high 3400s were the sweet spot with Sierra 50 bk's in my rig.

I tried Blc, h335, Tac, with no success.

What Bhead said... those Nosler loads are Whimpy... I get better performance from my 221 FurBall....

A MAX of 28grs. with newer R-P brass and Benchmark or tops of 27.5 grs. Benchmark in Herters or vintage Remington cases has worked great in 4 222 Mags for me.

Start low and work up. 3,400-3,500 is going to be about all the safe goody from a 24" tube and a 50 grainer.

26-27g of H335 with a 50g, use a THICK cup primer, and I shot 7 1/2 or cci br-4, unreal accuracy at 3600+.

H335 is very easy on barrels, we shot 600-1100 rounds of center fire a day on p. dog towns, and I started off with zero freebore. The 50g Sierra lead tip blitz is a very, very accurate bullet in this case with H335, touch the lands.

Howdy !

FWIW -
In "Guns & Ammo 1974 Annual", renowned ballistician Homer Powley recommended various IMR powders for use w/ a couple of different bullet weights.... in a variety of common '70s chamberings.

For the .222Mag, he recommended using IMR3031 w/ 50gr bullets, and IMR4064 for use w/ 55gr bullets. That gives one a pretty good idea of a powder " burn rate " range that works well in .222Mag.

My best friend is preparing to have a custom .222Mag built.
For current powders that are reported to be fairly temp insensitive,
I have suggested he try LT-32 and IMR4166; in-lieu of the powders mentioned above. He is going w/ a traditional barrel length, and 1-14 twist.

With regards,

For those of you who shoot a 222 mag. Whats a good load with 50gr. nosler ballistic tips?
i wanted max speed while maintaining accuracy(ghog hunting in the wind) and tried the faster powders mentioned. i had a lot of LT 32 and LT 30, so i tried them. the LT 30 is giving me 3400+ fps with a 55 gr Stark. primer pocket looseness is a downside as my load is stout. ruger 204 brass can take it but old 222 rem mag brass is marginal. nosler's recent run of 222 rem mag brass was great but case splitting was a prob and they are to make more...when?.
