What was or is the most popular bullet weight for the 222 Remington with 1-14 twist factory barrel?

It was introduced to the shooting world in 1950 with a 50grain bullet. Reloaders quickly went to using 52 gr. 53 gr. target match type bullets. mikeinct

For me it is the 52gr Speer FB HP and the 40gr NBT

From notes I had when I got my first 222. 1976 Precision Shooter, Mike Walker mentioned — 52g bullets over 4895
I believe 14 twist was the standard.

SPEER 50 grain TNT bullets works for me with Benchmark powder. I will be testing Barts 52 grain bullets in the near future.

Speer 50 gr TNT. With Ramshot Exterminator…very accurate in my Shilen Select Match Rem 700. 14 twist. Love that 222. Owned one since 1965.

Mike, great write up, thanks for sharing! Brings back many fond memories of my old Remington 722 in .222. What a great little rifle!

Depends on what you're looking for, a lot of the varmint guy's push a 40 vmax hard. I used this combo for a long time on G-hogs and fox. I shoot a vintage Vixen and the 40 vmax was barely in the neck seated where they shot. The Berger 52 FB V is very popular and what I'm currently shooting. At g-hog matches either combo was also competitive in factory class.

I have killed a ton of groundhogs with 50 Sierra Spitzer but for pure accuracy in every .22 cal centerfire I have owned it's Barts Custom 52gr HP. 40 gr Vmax as stated above
are very accurate also. I started my benchrest career with a .222 shooting 50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. Your rifle will tell you what it likes. Lots of great choices.

So far mine shoots best with Sierra 52 Gr Matchkings. A friend from the forum gave me some 57 grain Hillbilly Bullets to try. They are not very long for there weight, but I’m not sure if they are going to stabilize in 1:14 or not.

For varmint hunting, it's hard to beat the Hornady 50-grain SX bullets at .222 speed and that twist rate.

If you’re wanting a good 52g bullet to try, Barts Originals and Ultras are exceptional in my 222’s.

The 52g Originals shot so small from my Shilen barreled Savage the groups were hard to measure.. ….

The sx doesn't get the mention it should in most circles. They just plain shoot in anything I have ever tried to run them in. 50 and 55 both!

Yes the Hornady SX and the old Sierra Blitz
made the 222 do damage to varmints that would rival my old 22-250
The Sierra 52 grain hpbt will shoot ragged hole groups.

Howdy !

For hyper accuracy w/ the .222, the .224" cal bullet weights that are wel proven are the 52-53gr HPs.

For groundhogs, I prefered the 55SX over the 50SX, based on observed terminal performance.
These also shot quite well accuracy-wise, in a Savage 112V.

The 52gr Berger and 53gr SMK w/H322 would be my first choices. Not that other bullets and powders won't shoot very too but those two flat base bullets and H322 just always seem to be money.
