Mike, great write up, thanks for sharing! Brings back many fond memories of my old Remington 722 in .222. What a great little rifle!I stand corrected 48 grains soon replaced by the 50grain bullet. link below American Rifleman : https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/the-222-remington-story/
Depends on what you're looking for, a lot of the varmint guy's push a 40 vmax hard. I used this combo for a long time on G-hogs and fox. I shoot a vintage Vixen and the 40 vmax was barely in the neck seated where they shot. The Berger 52 FB V is very popular and what I'm currently shooting. At g-hog matches either combo was also competitive in factory class. What was or is the most popular bullet weight for the 222 Remington with 1-14 twist factory barrel?

The sx doesn't get the mention it should in most circles. They just plain shoot in anything I have ever tried to run them in. 50 and 55 both!I used many thousands of Hornady 50 sxsp and 52 smk.
