.22 long range help wanted

well I tried the Norma tac at 50 yards and it was very nice for a half inch, five round group, but at 100 yards, in my rifle it really opened up almost 1.75 inches. Whereas, Eley club was better as a baseline/comparison on the same outing.

Fine round for plinking up close, really nice tight repeatable groups to 50, didn't want to perform for me at 100. Functioned fine and will probably be a good round for some.

One thing you learn early on if you shoot .22 rimfire at both 50 yards and 100 yards is that just because your rifle (or pistol, if you shoot IHMSA small bore silhouette) likes an ammo at 50 yards, doesn't mean the combination will perform well at 100. Sorry you had to join that club. :(

Just to really make your day, while in general 50 yards makes a good screening test on the way to 100, once in awhile an ammo that was really mediocre at 50 yards and hence would be eliminated from further testing does fine at 100 if you dig it out and try it. ::) Ain't life great in the rimfire world?

Keep in plugging; the right one will show up.

I've played with 22lr out to 400 yards. A friend of mine and I were shooting 300 yards at a gong in 20 - 30 mph winds the other day and calling each others misses (and hits :) ) . It was challenging but fun. I can dial elevation out to about 350 yards, then I have to also hold over with mil dots to get to 400. I'm currently using a 20 MOA base and a 'tactical' scope.

Any suggestions to get more elevation with a Savage mark trr? Thinking about trying Burris signature Z rings with the offset inserts to get more cant.

Here's ten-shots at 50-yards

And my 400 yard gong on a calm day (lol, just ignore the 3-shot group from the 6mm)

Wolf Match Target ammo, sorted by rim thickness...

NICE SHOOTING , if more would try this , they would find its fun as hell and not impossible , as some think . We have are own Long Range spot over on RimFire Central now , just went up last night

Ive got a Remington 513T that Ive been wanting to shoot long range with, but it has no provision to mount a scope. We have an excellent gunsmith here in West Palm Beach that can put mounts on it, but he has been giving me the run around. Do you have any suggestions Ggmac?

Sell the collectable Remmy and buy a Savage , CZ , Kimber , H&R . And pocket the change ( for buying good 22 ammo )

It's not drilled for target bases. He's trying to do this on a small budget. He will not spend the money on a Lyman, unertl,or redfield.
If it had target bases I would have installed a Ken Vanni base or EGW .

Too bad. The Lyman SuperTarget really sets it off and it is surprisingly accurate. Even with a variety of match grade Annies, 52s, and 40x's to choose from, this was my son's favorite for 100 yard plinking.

I just don't see the need for an antique scope when I could care less about style or collector value. I bought this gun to shoot and gave a $100 for it. I will look into an Vanni base but I think its a waste of money when weavers will do the job. A good Leupold and then I can shoot or try to shoot 300yds also.

And that's why I will not drill and tap . I do care and will not ruin a collectable. Just my way . I don't do this for profit I'm retired. Many capable smiths out there.

Are you shooting at a range or on private property?
Spotting misses is the hard part.
If there is grass it will be really tough to see impacts.
We were just shooting my friends CMMG 22 upper out to 450 yards using an ADM 30 MOA mount and a Tasco Super Sniper. I used the Shooter app, the listed MV on the box of ammo and BC info from the Internet to get a fair idea of what our elevation and windage calls should be.
We were using an IPSC steel target and found the plunging trajectory combined with a good tail wind tough to dope consistently.
The wind would change a small amount and it'd be very tough to observe where the misses even with the help of a 60x Konus.
Shooting over the target can easily look like a miss low.
I'd try to find an ammo that provides very low standard deviation in your rifle as the wind will give you more than enough vertical dispersion.

It sounds like you got a heck of a buy. As we like to say, "consider it collected". A friend just put the 1st round through a Remington 40X sporter. We figured the shot cost him a good $1000. Neither of us own any wall hangers.

Out of curiosity regarding the variations, is the barrel drilled and tapped for blocks?

Shooting rimfire at distance is a pisser!
Agree, its a challenge to see impacts/misses, under certain circumstances. To combat this, I prefer to use thin diamond plate, or some other thin scrap steel for LR rimfire targets. A subsonic .22 target bullet won't penetrate it, and the audible & visual confirmation of a hit on the thin metal plate is exaggerated...
IF conditions are right, you might be able to actually SEE a subsonic bullet on the way to the target. Looks like a little black bug arcing into the plate. If you can pick that up, it helps to spot misses if the backstop is not conducive for seeing them...

Agreed, getting on and seeing splash is the hard part once you get to 300 and beyond with .22.

Here is what we do. I made a large "Dirty Bird" type home made target. Then I replace the target in the center when we are shooting groups/changing shooters. 300 yard hits are no problem to see through the scope.

You can see in video below, where the first couple shots were before elevation windage corrections were made.

This 300 yards with CCI Blazer that chrono'd 1260 FPS through a suppressor.

Gary you know I consider you the best gun plumber out there and will use no other. If you could just get over the Savage thing you could apply for sainthood, but with Savages in your back ground It aint going to happen.

What Savage or H&R models do you recommend? I haven't heard much good about the Kimber's, a lot of money and they don't shot well enough to justify it, they are getting hard to find also. Cz's would be cool but you know me I need a project, couldn't just buy something that will shoot.

Also love to shoot the little bullet to long distance and have started messing around with doing it with pellets trying to snipe frogs at long range in the Philippines when bored, believe it or not. Really is a kick for sure. It's often quite dry at our local range, and bullet impact can be seen even at extreme ranges. I have shot all the way out to 600 yds. with the big pistols we use and it is quite fun. I have an 8-26X Horus Vision Predator on this MR Picuda mounted in Burris rings using the +/- 20 inserts shimmed with plastic strips between the insert and scope tube with the correct thickness such that when zeroed at 100 yds. I have 5 MOA or less of DOWN left in the optic's turret, allowing me about 150 MOA of UP reticle+turret--

You can see the white plastic shim between the +20 insert and scope tube in this pic--

Nice thing about short OAL length optics is that they have a lot of turret travel in them. This little Barska had 90+ MOA in it and returned to zero no problem. Made 2 1st-shot connections on small targets at 225 and 300 yds. with this little pistol--

I love shooting my Brno Model 4 with match sights at range,,from a 100 zero it takes 18-20 moa to reach 200 and 40-43 moa for 300 depending on ammo and conditions,,a 20 inch plate at 300 makes for some fun shooting,,

I made a stencile for an 16 inch target I spray paint newspaper for 200 yard targets and can usually hold 4-5 inches prone with the Palma sight on my CZ 452 Ultra Lux in a mach stock,,

I have best results past 100 yards with RWS R100 which chronies 1098-1110 fps in my 28 inc barrels,

200 yards with the 452 and Palma sight with Eley Match
