.22 long range help wanted

Hat's off to you mr.big; that's really good shooting with iron sights from prone at that range with a .22 RF. Glad to see there are still people willing to play with them at longer ranges with iron sights.

I teach a lot of kids and start them on 22s. I shoot a Thomson semi-auto and it really likes American eagles. I have a shepherd scope on gun made to shoot 22s. if very little wind I have them hitting a bowling pin at 300yds before they go home! I shoot a lot of sage rats and out to 250yds in light wind they are in big trouble!

Tempest,

If you would be so kind as to explain how you made the "Dirty Bird Target" that you were shooting in the video clip,
I am greatly interested in making one. :) Is it man portable? ;D

I also shoot from 300 to 600+ yds (pistol and rifle) with the 22 LR, I use a 4' by 6' long target backer, made from disc blades and electrical conduit.
The only problem is when the wind comes up, it will tip over, (and the wind NEVER stops blowing here).
As the public range is set up with the wind blowing cross wind to the target impact areas etc. >:(

The best groups so far have been 3.5" for 5 shots at 350yds using my TC Bull bbl, using 1970 vintage Rem ammo,
on the Rare day the wind did not blow for over 2 hrs+. This was with a 15x rifle scope with multiaple cross hairs and and standard base,
which has now been changed to Burris rings + 10 MOA inserts and EGW +20 MOA base, on both weapons.

Finally got my PTG match reamer and some good bbls, for the Savage rifle/pistols for another testing session. Just have to stop the complete remodel (inside/outside) to get the time.

Tia,
Don

Agreed, getting on and seeing splash is the hard part once you get to 300 and beyond with .22.

Here is what we do. I made a large "Dirty Bird" type home made target. Then I replace the target in the center when we are shooting groups/changing shooters. 300 yard hits are no problem to see through the scope.

You can see in video below, where the first couple shots were before elevation windage corrections were made.

For the last 8 months my club has been shooting a 200 yard rimfire (.22 LR) benchrest match. We went off program to try and put together a match that would appeal to young and old shooters alike. We have found that reactive targets seem to draw more attention from young shooters. With that in mind, we shoot at golf balls at 200 yards. Each shooter gets two runs of 10 shots each at the golf ball rack - built to hold 20 balls horizontally. Winner is high score / best of 20. So far it has been a lot of fun!

Own a 22LR BSA model 12 Parker Hale rear peep and globe front sight. It shoots quite well. One day at range there was no wind and someone had left clay pidgeons on the 200 yd berm. Chuckle, around 70 clicks later on rear sight, had found their range and began to hit them on a regular basis (about three rounds needed per pidgeon) shooting from benchrest. Week later at range, a fellow shooter was trying his hand at a pie plate at 200 yds with one of his more accurate 22 rifles that was scoped. Think it was a Remington 513. Another guy was spotting for him with his 60x spotting scope. I was near enough to hear him call the shots, miss to the right at 3 O'clock and etc. After 6 or so shots and he hadn't hit the pie plate, I remembered my BSA was in still in my truck and its rear sight was still set for 200 yds....so, took the rifle to him to try, giving him a box of my ammo for it. He is a better shooter than me when it comes to accuracy. I told him, sights are right for 200 yds, just aim the rifle at the pie plate and see what you can do with it.

His first round hit at 12 O-clock about 1/2" inside outer rim of plate. Spotter missed it at first, saying miss.....then a pause and then called hit, giving location. With his next 8 or so shots, he'd hit center of pie plate with about a 3" group. Then I spent the next several minutes, telling him.....NO, I'm not selling you the rifle, dispite some mighty tempting offers. He will later acquire several models of 22 LR BSA target rifles.

Hi all first time posting. I'm been reading for some time now about long range .22 shooting I'm wanting to give it a try any tips or information would be grate I'm going to try 200y first then move out to 300y later on. At these ranges what size targets should I be using? What size groups do u shoot? What ammunition do u use fps? bullet weight? I have cci mini mag 36g 1250fps cci sub sonic 40g 1050fps and my bench rest ammunition sk (lapua) pistol match. Scope is a nightforce 12-42-56 br rife is a armscor 1400ts single shot.

I have been shooing long range rimfire for a few years. Depending how far you want to go out. You will need a 20 moa base, and / or Weaver rings with inserts, they will get you 40 moa in 1" scope, and 20 moa in 30mm scope. I use a DIP 25 moa base and the Weaver rings.

Ammo is what shoots best in your gun. My built 10-22 likes Eley black box and Wolf match target. I found Norma Tac22 that shoots very well. I groups at 50 yds, then steel at longer ranges. I also shoot match sticks and split playing cards at 50 yds. Gum balls glued to golf tee at 100 yds. clays at 200 to 330 yds. steel gongs at 425 yds. that is far as my scope will go.
check out all there videos

good shooting

I’ve been shooting .22LR from 50 meters out to 200 meters for a short time now, and look forward to shooting a lot more at longer distances. I have a recently purchased Anschutz 64 MPR. It is mounted with a Leupold VX3 6.5-20 X 50 side focus scope with a Varmint reticle. Rifle is stock out of the box and my first go at shooting 200 meters was a group of 6 rounds comfortably inside 2 inches on paper, so well within 1 MOA. There was a varying wind that day and I needed approximately 5 MOA of left wind. I’ve also shot the same distance on an 8" white painted steel disc target with the same results. I like the steel because I can see the hits in the scope and also hear them. I shoot using a Harris bipod and a Protecktor rabbit ear bag. The Anschutz will shoot consistent .5" at 50 meters and sub 1.0" at 100 meters. Great practise for wind reading and satisfaction when I make the right wind call or adjustment.

Forgot to mention... I’m using Lapua Rifle Match at 50 and 100 meters and Federal 510 for 200 meters or more.
