.22 long range help wanted

Hi all first time posting. I'm been reading for some time now about long range .22 shooting I'm wanting to give it a try any tips or information would be grate I'm going to try 200y first then move out to 300y later on. At these ranges what size targets should I be using? What size groups do u shoot? What ammunition do u use fps? bullet weight? I have cci mini mag 36g 1250fps cci sub sonic 40g 1050fps and my bench rest ammunition sk (lapua) pistol match. Scope is a nightforce 12-42-56 br rife is a armscor 1400ts single shot.

I have been shooting 200 and 300 for about 6-7 years now . It's not easy but it is a great way to stay in shape , wind reading , breathing , etc.
Use std vel , you will have to try as many diff types of ammo as you can handle.
What shoots great at 100 May not do so at longer range.
My aim point is 1" , drop at 300 is anywhere from 9' to 13' , don't ask as I can only guess why . If your scope has enough elevation you should be good to go.
Use wind flags . Time for some coffee and walk the dog .
Pm me if you have any more questions.
Good luck , Gary

OK , coffee break over . I forgot to mention one very important factor , procedure , use a plumb bob to establish all sighting . Use of a scope level is mandatory also . Record all data . It is fact that std vel , while it drops more has less drift . Use whatever ammo is the most accurate at the range you are shooting .
Good luck ,Gary

I shoot the standard 200 yard target, prone, which is twice the size of the 100 - 2 inch X ring. Anything that starts out supersonic will suffer when it drops through the sound barrier. I use Center X and the last time I shot it cleaned the target. Wind is critical. Steady hold and follow through are critical. A wind change of 3 MPH, which is difficult to feel, will cost you a point. Play around with the JPM calculator for 1070 fps and a .145 ballistic coefficient to get a feel.

Mark

Running the JPM ballistic calculator, a 40 grain 22 bullet with a muzzle velocity of 1070 will drift 3.2 inches at 300 yards with a 1 MPH wind. Was it a 1 shot group? Unless he is shooting a factory 10/22 from the hip using copper plated high velocity bullets from Mexico; it can't be done.

Agreed. Here is what I see for accuracy (using a very accurate rifle and ammo combo):

50yds: sub 1/2 MOA is easy and expected in good conditions
100yds: 1/2 MOA if the conditions are great but still not the norm, more like 3/4 MOA, so sub MOA is easy
200-230yds (I mainly shoot at 230yds as opposed to 200) for sub MOA conditions have to be spot on and ammo is a HUGE factor, 1 1/2 MOA is more common when the conditions can be read easily and corrected for, and over 1 1/2 MOA if the wind is switching or hard to read.

I have not tested past 230yds much so I have no data. However I have shot many thousands of rounds from 50yds to 230yds to base my data on. All my shooting is done off a bipod and rear field bag (square or round not an eared benchrest bag). Here is some good data that we have put a lot of time into:

I milled a 42 min base . It was a 45 ,but was too much . I'm using an older fixed 36x scope which doesn't have as much elevation as newer scopes.

I think the biggest factor in getting anywhere a decent group with any wind movement is having a scope powerful enough to see your holes and using wind flags. If one can't see his shots to make rapid adjustments as he completes his string, he will be at a tremendous disadvantage. Eley black box match works well for a lot of folks at 100 yards and beyond.

Good lord JMC--where did you ever get ahold of one of those rigs? I bought one several years back for a buddy in the Philippines. It shoots pretty well for him, with Armscor ammo. That's certainly an oddball (but very neat) rifle there. Be nice to see a pic. of it sir.

Thanks Mod70 I didn't even think he was referring to my post . After reading I guess no one else mentioned 1" ,AIMPOINT
Gary

I think a lot of good points were made so far . The best I heard was try as many kinds of shells as you can stand , every rifle is different , I shoot a CZ 452 silhouette and have tried lots of loads but the Remington / ely target rifle shoots very good with 1080 fps and the lapua is top dog . For trigger time with surprising results , the centurion orange box does well to 250 on hot days. Being able to see where your hits are is also critical . Just don't forget to have fun !

Give Tac 22 a try, My 1st box I shot a .325" outside to outside 5 shot group at 75 yards with a 12x scope on my Savage bolt action, which is great for me.

Xi also had good groups with Tac22. I understand Norma came out with a match or target Tac 22 . I haven't tried the match stuff yet .

Flylo.CONGRATULATIONS .......You just shot the alltime best 22 group. This record will never be broken. point .101 c-t-c at 75 yards,,,Outstanding
