22 ammo testing

The rest was in fact modeled after a Cliff Arnold which is the rest in the background.
The rifle is Turbo V1 action, Muller 7 groove barrel, Harrells tuner, Bix N Andy trigger and a Lidgard stock. The rifle wears a NightForce 42x43 Competition scope.
Needless to say, it shoots very well.
Hard to beat that combination.

Our rifles were tested last Thursday at the Lapua Performance Center. Other than a malfunction with the 50 meter target, the test went reasonably well. We chose our ammunition and were treated quite nicely. As stated, other than not having fifty meter target printouts the trip was well worth it. If one is starting with a new rifle or searching for a good shooting lot number, a test like this can be a great savings of time and expense. Thanks, Lapua.

Maybe something that will help you guys to know. Both Eley and Lapua use the exact same electronic system to score and they both place the rifle into a vice. For many of us, we prefer to test the rifles in our own stocks as we feel that it does make a difference in results after you get your ammo home and start shooting. It's the same setup you will use on the rest so the overall "system" is as close as you can be when testing. Only you can make that decision if that is important to you. I know for a fact the Lapua will do this as I have done it. I have also tested guns at TX but they were taken out of the stock at the time. I would call Killoughs and ask if they do that as well now. I suspect they will.

As John mentions, Eley requires at least 1/2 case purchase of Tenex UNLESS you send a known lot of ammo (Eley or Lapua) to them and they cannot beat the results. For a new gun that doesn't help, but for a gun with a known result with a certain lot of ammo, it can definitely not hurt.

Another key point is that Lapua does test both CenterX and Midas+ and if you are willing to buy Xact they will test that as well. There is a flat $50 per gun to test but if you buy a large quantity (I don't know the exact number) they will waive the test fee.

Also, there was a comment made about having an Eley chamber. There is no such thing as an Eley Chamber. When people say that they are normally referring to the leade being cut at 2 degrees. A 2 degree chamber can shoot both Eley and Lapua equally well, you just need to test. Sometimes you hear of a Lapua chamber. This is typically a 1.5 degree leade. Depending how deep it is cut, it may also shoot both Eley or Lapua equally well. My simple point is there are no hard and fast rules in this game where you should limit yourself from testing.

If I was in Indiana, I would drive to OH and test at Lapua in person first. If I didn't like the results, I would then send to TX. They are both great people to work with and I am not saying one ammo is better than another, just that I would prefer to do it in person. I have tested with both.

For clarity and correctness, it's "leade", not lead. Lead can be confusing when talking about .22 ammunition. The leade is where the rifling begins.
