22-250 bullet of choice.

I am getting ready to start loading for my 22-250. It’s a savage 10 predator max1 24 in 1-12 twist barrel. I loaded ups some 50gr vmax for it after I got it and it shot them decent. Just wondered if any one would recommend any bullets that they have had good luck with. Was gonna try the 53 vmax but they are hard to come by. Main purpose is shooting paper or steel and some ground hogs. Thanks !!

H380 and 40 grain vmax or BK
Look at Sierras load data for accuracy load.
A lot of BS on the 22-250, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I have not found it to be near as picky as I was led to believe. 1-12 or 1-14, use a 40 or 50 grain bullet.

Thanks for the info. Thinking about 52 gr Berger or sierras any experience

I've had a lot of success with the 50 grain Nosler BT's in a 14" twist Rem 700.

Since yours is a 12" I'd opt for the 55 Nosler BT's or Sierra 55 BTHP.

I just got a new, used Hall action in 22-250 that loves IMR 4895 and 55 grain Blitzkings 1-14 twist. Never saw a 22-250 that wouldn't shoot pretty well with IMR 4064 and a 55 of some sort. H380 usually is fast and accurate as well.

Here’s what my Savage target action w/ a 1:12 Shilen did at 100 yds, five shot groups with Berger Varmint and target bullets.

Hornady 52 gr eld match, or the 52 match hp will be easy to workup loads with. They are available and reasonably priced. H4895, varget, imr 8208, I'm looking at trying AR comp with 50-55 gr bullets in my 22-250's.

Until you can find some 53 V-max, try the 60 grain Sierra TMK. It stabilizes in both my 12 twist 22-250s and shoots very well.

I have used them on pds and they were not as explosive as the V-max, but they did alright. For ground hogs they should work great. Excellent bullet for shooting out longer distances.

Howdy !

Boy if your 1-12 barrel would allow their use, then it would be hard to beat the Hornady 55SX ! It has been my go to groundhog bullet for 45 yr. When Fred Sinclair make me a custom groundhog gun chambered in my .22-35 Remington wildcat, I had him set it up specifically for the 55SX.
As it turned out, the 55SX out-shot all other .224" cal bullets of any wt, including custom 52gr benchrest bullets; when shot from that rifle.

I am a fan of shooting high load density. My powder recommendations are in that vein. These days, temp stable powders like H4350 and the new StaBal 6.5 deserve a look. Hybrid 100V is also in that burn rate range. I was able to successfully shoot the 55SX from 24" 1-14 twist
.22-250 barrels and also my 24" Hart SS 1-14 .22-35. The highest vel I shot was 3,690fps, which was well above Hornady's max recommended
velocity level. That does suggest that max charges of some of the above powders in a .22-250 might approach the 55SX' vel limits.

IMHO- given the comparative low price of the 55SX, they'd be worth a try ?

I was looking at those. I have had great luck with the 69gr tmk In my 22 br great bullets. I was just worried about my barrel stabilizing them

357 mag has it with the super explosive (SX). I've personally done a little better (at 100 yards) with the 50 grain. If you try them and decide on them you better get a bunch. For some reason they're not used by todays shooters much and I look for them to discontinue them. They're also awesome in an early 722 in 222

Another bullet to try that is similar to the 53 V-Max is the Nosler 23 Varmageddon which is flat based & maybe easier to tune. They shot a bit better in my 223AI than the V-Max.

I shot the 12" twist 22-250 for quite a few years and they were very easy to work with. This was before the 40 gr bullets became popular. I only worked with 50-55 gr bullets and mostly H4895 and Varget.

Like most 22-250 guys, I had to try 38 gr H380 but
settled on the H4895 and Varget.

Varmint bullets: 50 and 55 gr Sierra FB Spitzer,
55 gr Sierra BT SP, 50 and 55 gr Blitz King were used.

Match bullets: Sierra 52 and 53 gr MK were both
very accurate for paper.

The 55 gr Bk was very accurate and was devastating on GH's and PD's. I thought this bullet was the best .224 varmint bullet of all.

The 50 gr BK was a very good varmint bullet and was very accurate----possibly as accurate as the MK's.

Greater choices with today's bullets and powders should offer even better results than I saw.

Shoot'em good and vote.
