9 twist 22-250

I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on a fast twist 22-250.. I have ran across a good buy on a bergara 22-250, it has a 24” 9 twist barrel from factory. I’m not looking to get into the heavy bullet game as this is gonna be a coyote/varmint rifle so I want fast/flat shooting... I understand guys that want to shoot heavy bullets out of them but 99% of my shots will be inside 350 yds so the need for heavy/long bullets isn’t there I don’t believe...

My question is have any of you had luck getting a 53-55 grain bullet to shoot in them? Also how much will the faster twist header velocity?

Thanks guys
My 22-250 AI pushes the 53 Vmax over 4k fps and I've never blown one up. Excellent accuracy too. 8 twist barrel. 30" long. I built it for 80s but have had good success with 53-69s also. You will find the 9 twist will also.

I have an 8 twist 22-250. I built it around the 75gr hornady amax. It shoots those great. It shoots 60gr nosler bt great. It shoots 55gr factory ammo great.

Got the rifle last week, shot it some today. All I have for it right now is some 55 grain v max Hornady factory ammo, haven’t had a chance to load for it yet.. shot one 3 shot group with it that was around .480 or do and a 5 shot that opened up to .900

Seems to look pretty promising so far

What kind of velocity have you been able to achieve. I have a Bergara 22-250 as well, it seem to shoot about everything decent. Only tried 53gr V-max and 69 SMK. I know with a 24" barrel i'm giving up some there. Shoots best groups (0.5") 53gr V-max groups with 34.5gr Varget 0.050" off lands, but only just below 3400 fps. It also shoots the 69gr SMK great (0.4") with 32.0gr Varget at 3050 fps. I thought about trying some 69gr TMK and/or 75gr ELD-M. I've just started playing with IMR 4166 and the 53gr V-max, gets me more speed, and can shoots 0.75" groups with 36.0gr of the 4166 @ closer to 3600fps, just bad velocity extreme spreads.

Tried H4895, IMR 4166 and Varget again over weekend. Was able to achieve right at .5x" groups with 36.0gr IMR 4166 & 36.5gr Varget, in the 3620 FPS range. After doing some seating depth test, found that 0.128" off the lands produce the groups and velocity. Might be tops i'll get out of the 24" barrel. This is Hornady brass, BR2 primers, 53gr V-max.

having a fast twist 22-50 and using light bullets defeats the purpose. I have a 1x8 22-250 for long range work and I shot tiny groups with 52-53 gr bullets just to get rid of them. it is better to over stabilize a bullet then to under stabilize it. you will find a 55 gr it will like. I have savage 223 1x9 and it shot tiny groups with 52-55 gr

I used a 22-250 9T for one season on PD's. It shot 40g V-Maxes better than 60's.

I bought a case of Winch 45g to supplant my ammo supply but I could only shoot about 10 shots before the bullets started blowing up and had to let the barrel cool down. I pulled the Winch 45g bullets and reseated 40 V-Maxes over the factory powder and all was well.

Retired the 22-250 after only about 500 rounds and now use a 20 Vartarg for almost all PD shooting........way mo' better.

go with the 60 grain sierra and you will be fine

New to date, Bergara HMR-PRO 22-250 1:9.
In 50F weather. I'm pushing 53gr V-max to ~3590 FPS, seated short. 0.128" off lands with 36.5gr Varget. Still 0.5" to 0.6" groups
Also 69gr Sierra TMK 0.060" off lands 3190 FPS with H4350 very good ES, in the 10 FPS range. Best groups 0.3" to 0.5".
Hornady brass CCI BR2 primer.
I was going to try some 75gr ELDM, just can't get good results, pressure signs and bolt lift on H4350, Varget, and H4831SC, at best accuracy loads.

I have a 22-250 AI that will shoot the Nosler 55 bt very well and I’ve pushed them over 4000 but my go to favorite 50 grain Hornady v max looked like a mini shotgun pattern on paper they wouldn’t hold together. I think I settled on 69 grain Burgers in it, haven’t played with it in 4 or 5 years.

My son bought one of these in a southpaw version, haven’t shot it yet. Planning on running a pretty full case of H4350 with a mag primer and a 77 smk. Hopefully it shoots.

I put a Criterian 1" bull SS barrel on a standard Remington action from Northland Supply. a Remage deal and nut and it shoots very well with a 9 twist. New right out of the box with 36 grains of CFE 223 and a 50vmax bullet about .010 of the lands shoots all the time 5 shots into my little finger nail every time. Velocity about 3600 fps and seams to do the same with 52 grain vmax and 53 grain vmax. as well. love shooting gophers with it...

This doesn't really answer the question, but out of my 26" Savage chambered in .223, I push a 53gr vmax 3,500 fps. At 350 yds it has 13.8" of drop and 11.8" of wind. If I bump the velocity up to 3850 to approximate what I'd expect to see from a 22-250, the drop becomes 10.7" and the wind becomes 10.5". Seems like a lot of powder to burn just to pick up 3" of elevation, and just over 1" of wind. I'd lean more towards a 64gr ELD-VT which should have almost the same drop, but appreciably less wind drift.

Them are some REALLY big gophers....

A fast twist won’t shoot the lighter weight bullets? LOL
My 8 twist 22-250 shoots the 55 grain Sierra BKs fine @ 3700. The added rpms increase the “blow up factor” when they hit a soft target. Mostly shooting the 77 TMKs lately but the lighter bullets will shoot fine. Plenty of other guys reporting that they shoot 50s and such out of 8 & 9 twists.

I shot 40g VMax's in a 9T 22-250 @4000+ when I was using that caliber for PDs. The rpms and velocity were devastating.

However 45g OEM Winny's blew up after the barrel warmed up. I had bought a case of loaded ammo for a PD trip with a new barrel and needed brass anyway. Pulled the bullets when I got home and stuffed in a 40 Max on top of the OEM powder.....worked fine.

That barrel is now a PDn 222....after a 5 yr hiatus from PDn.....mo betta. I've graduated from shooting 400-500 when dogs go down to moving the ATV. PXL_20240612_233229868.jpg
