22-250 bullet of choice.

I have a mdl 12 FVSS with a 26” 1-12 twist barrel. It shoots tiny groups at 100 yards and is death on groundhogs out to 470 yards (so far) with Sierra 1365, 55gr Gamekings over Varget.

Well, I'm DONE TRYING, to get the 55 Grain NBT's to shoot, in my 14 Twist, .22-250 Rem,.. DONE !
I put the Box of 55 gr NBT bullets, in the .223 Rem AR's, ( 1-7 TW ) "load box", to shoot plates / plink with, later ! I could NOT get, CONSISTENT, groups ! My measured, 55 NBT Bullets are .817 Long ( should have measured, FIRST and YUP, I know better ! ) Good group, ONE Day,.. CHIT, the next ! Cold weather, groups, sucked and I WASTED a lot of, Time with THIS, Bullet ! Bought some, Berger 55 Flat Base HP, Varmint and plain old, 55 Hornady SP's, flat Base bullets, to try ! Scored Bullets and 2 pounds of, H-380, a couple of Days ago. The 60 grain Varminter, Sierra's # 1375 do "work" GOOD with, a stiff load of H-414, tho ! Gonna be my Coyote load for now, Til' I get, the Berger's, fine tuned !

SO after 60 responses, whats the most popular bullet / weight / powder / primer / case / intended target ?
I KNOW exactly what, Bullets my .22-250 Rem 1-14 TW.,.. WON'T, shoot ! Any "tipped" Boat Tail Bullet over, .780 long is,.. ERRATIC in my Rifle ( Shoots good,.. "sometimes",.. Temp / weather dependent,.. LOL ).
I'm going back to, Sierra and Berger HP Varminter's in the Flat Based, 60's and 55's and Hornady's NEWLY redone, #2265 Varmint with, the Nose reshaped like, an A-Max. I will be "test driving" the Hornady's with, 37.7 and 38.1 grains of H-380 as soon as, the Wind let up, a bit ! My shots will usually be 400 yards or less, on Sage Rats and Coyotes, so these Flat Based Bullets will, work fine for me ! I have, a .243 Win with, 87 gr HVLD Berger's / V-Maxes, IF I need to go, further ! NEWBIES to, the .22-250 with, 1-14 TW should MEASURE, the Bullets "desired", as they usually NEED to be under .750 to .775 Long for group, consistency ! Only ACCURATE Rifles are interesting !

I’d give the 52gr Berger Varmints a hard look. I’ve tried the same load with H380 and it was a great shooter in 3 different rifles. I’ve since gotten away from H380 due to terrible temp sensitivity and switched to Varget.

Thanks, 4ester,.. Heard the 52's were great, too! ( will try them, IF they ever get back in stock ! )
I just scored, 200 Berger 55 gr HP Varmint's and 2 pounds of, H-380, a few Days ago !
And Midway has, the Hornady #2265's in stock, for now.
Ammo, Bullets, Powder and Primers, are disappearing off shelves here, in S. Idaho !
I wanted to, "throw" a Ball Powder, as am getting tired ( or, lazy ) with weighing of chg's for now.
YUP, I heard that, H-380 is Temp Sensitive at Max levels, so will put loaded rounds, in a small cooler when needed for, summer Sage Rat, use ! Sadly, there were 2 Pounds of Varget sitting right next to the H-380 at the local Walmart but, I wasn't familiar with it's use, in the .22-250 at, the "Time" ! Chit, I should have bought them, too! I Did get, my grandson, 2 Pounds of H-1000 for his new 6.5 PRC, tho ! The Gun Shops, are full of People and the shelves are getting,.. "cleaned", here !

I have the exact same 22-250. Put a Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25x50mm Z-Plex on mine. I did barrel break-in using Hornady 55 v-max factory ammo and my barrel seemed to just love this bullet!

But I started with 52 Berger match target hollow points with Varget, then later Reloder 15.
50 NBT's with Reloder 15. Good performing little bullet, craters stuff even further out.
55 Sierra BK's with Varget (incredibly EXPLOSIVE on ground-hogs at closer ranges!)
55 V-max's with both IMR-4064 and Varget.

4064 was good and accurate, but I think Varget is more temp stable and seems to work very well in the 22-250. So I ultimately came back around to shooting 55 V-max's and my current load is:

55 V-MAX
36.5 Varget
2.345" OAL
WLR primers
in Lapua brass
doing about 3,725 fps

I neck size only with a Lee collet die,
then seat w/Redding Competition Seater die.

Happy to share any of my other loads - just PM me if interested. The Max 1 with it's fluted medium heavy barrel and oversized bolt and nice accutrigger is one fine shooting rifle! Barrel cleans up quickly, doesn't really need any foulers after cleaning either. It's just point and click - fast, flat, accurate as heck, reliable. The gun itself is a little heavy and the Zeiss didn't help that situation any, but most of my ground-hogging any more is just hike it in - set it up on the highest point in the field - and snipe. If I want to walk-n-stalk I take the Tikka in 243win or if the crops are up I will often just go to my CZ 527 American in 22 Hornet.
