.204 ruger in F-class

I just picked up a .204 Ruger for varmint hunting, but I have yet to really put the round through its paces at long range. Just wondering if anyone is using it for F-Class or any sort of distance competition?

Thoughts?

umm, you will have sketchy luck at 600yds and no luck at all to 1K with that round.

50gn bullet is the heaviest that i know of, and your twist probably wont handle it.

So the short answer is NO

That round is good till probably 500yds and would get a little sketchy after that.

If you wnat to shoot f-class with a factory round/rifle, you need at the VERY least a 243.

Correction JB,

A standard 6BR can be competitive in F-Class, and the factory-loaded ammo will do .3 MOA in a good gun. I'd still probably have more horsepower for 800 and 1000 yards. But John Brewer took the 2004 F-Class Nat'ls shooting his 6BR on the 600-yard leg of the match.

"factory" :D I guess my "factory" meant more widespread calibers -- i have a hard time thinking of 6br as factory since there are soooo few offerings ;)

Hi you could probably use the 204 at 300 to 500 yards but it WILL NOT BE COMPETATIVE the tiny bullets get blown around a lot if you used a 223 with 69 to 80gr bullets, some factory 9 twists will stabalise the 80gr Sierra) it will out shoot your 204 any where and with a stabalised 80gr Sierra you can even shoot at 1000. i think the 204 is over stated as said before the 243 is your best option with a heavy barrel Remington they have 9.25 twist that will stabalise the 90gr VLD bullets and shots verry well.

A bit of confusion with my post perhaps.

I use nothing but custom 6BR for UIT / F-class shooting. I also have fun with .308 out to 1k but I don't want to be wasting barrel life or using my scenars for whacking rodents.

I was merely wondering if anyone HAD used the 204 beyond 500 yards, and what sort of results they had gotten, particularly if anyone had gone so far as to find a 204 custom barrel.

Shooting varmints past 300 is no fun anyway because you don't get to see them explode as easily ;)

Hi if you are looking for a new barrel to shoot the 204 in look at the verry good report on the home page about 20 cals. I would look at a faster twist to use those long boat tail 20 cals if you shot them you would probably get 5 to 600 yards if you just wanted to shoot it in F Class with the light 204 it could be fun watching the marker looking for a microscopic hole juse hope he is nice and doesent give you misses because he cant se the holes.:)

Look for a gaad barrel and faster twist and have fun

Corbin -- know all about little rounds and long range. A couple buds have used a 17cal fairly successfully in 1000ydBR, and one is infact IN Iowa at the IBS Nats right now...

But this takes the right bullets and combination of other parts. This combo just doesnt really exist in a factory 204 config.

JB :)

Corbin,

How about a Sauer, Tanner or Blaser CISM gun, scoped) shooting factory Lapua 105s. Nah, that would be cheating I think...
