2020 list of sub $1000 custom actions?

A bat sv action may be a little over 1000 unless you find a good used one but bat makes a good action and they tend to hold resell value imo.

As stated above Kelblys atlas can be had single shot /cone or flat bolt face and coated
Extremely smooth one of the best values out there for 1000 bones

about to start my 2020 build (little late....thanks rona) and am going with a single shot action.

dedicated 250yd rifle to shoot from the bench. prob a 6br.

considering getting a single shot 700 action...but figure once all the truing is done, i'll be close/at custom action price.

So...who all makes a sub $1000 action these days? currently looking at a PTG B12 action with a full size m16 extractor

What is a dedicated '250 yard' rifle?

Do you have plans to compete or is this just for personal pleasure?

Sub $1K actions is really not where we want the industry heading. Many out there need similar work as your Remington. In fact the new production Remington action bodies are quite good, straighter than many budget customs.

Budget is only one consideration especially if you have plans to compete. One of the new Remingtons might be just the ticket to get your feet wet and gain some experience. On the other hand, budget priced actions occasionally have the same costs associated with them as the Remingtons no matter who makes them. The same thing can also work in reverse also.

The price point for top-of-the-line actions has already been established unfortunately as they use that price to differentiate themselves from the rest that might consider themselves to be the same quality. This tactic is used in every industry worldwide. Higher prices often convey the idea of higher quality even if that case is not proven to be true. But the perception is there, so prices escalate without the increase in quality.

This is where the importance of groups such as this become extremely valuable. Members with experience with a broad range of products in every category can be used for that experience helping others who are trying to advance their skills.

I suggest trying to buy from the classified section where you can get a significant boost in the search for quality at what might be a reduced cost.

We measure a rifles accuracy by group size. There is only one sport that measures accuracy (group size). This is where deficiencies in action design and manufacture show up and are found and corrected. Some of that trickles down but I would say most of it doesnt. Im seeing stuff in some actions that should never made it out the door. Some even designed that way intentionally. They are gaining a market share because "smiths" do not check this stuff out. Slap it together and out the door. This in turn makes the guys trying to do it right look at lost sales and start heading that direction. The last thing we want to see is our good Benchrest action manufacturers going "tactical". I say support those putting out the best. Rant over :)

I vote Borden, although none of his actions will meet your sub 1k budget. At that price I'd go used instead.

Why buy new? I see nice complete custom action rifles on this site for less than $2000. You will save $1000 or more versus a new build. They are all used after the first round.
getting what i actually want. most used builds seem to be old stuff with tight neck chambers and mostly 6ppc or 30br...neither is what i want, and most of the stocks have crazy paint jobs or just aren't something im interested in. I do check up on br.com to see if anything pops up pretty frequently though!

the range i shoot at is 250yds. i have no desire to compete, other than against my friends. i just wanna shoot small-ish groups at that range with something like a 6br or 6arc or similar factory loaded/easy reloading rounds.

Savage offers a Varmint platform chambered in 6BR that might suit your criteria. 26 inch barrel RBLP single shot

In reality with a bit of work you could buy a cheap 700 strip it and get a chunk of your money back. I have seen them with rebates at different online dealers for right around 300 bucks.

no real desire to ever have another savage.

but based on some PM's and some advice on my budget for this...im just doing another rem action with a remage barrel.

My last two builds are exactly that, both bought used as well. Just last month I picked up a 700 with a CBI remage in 6br, complete rifle (no scope), Shilen trigger, fajen stock, and only a couple hundred rounds through it for $600 shipped, right here in the classified.

Look at the hourly rates ATV repair shops get. What about the guy that comes and fixes your air conditioner?

These action makers have more $ tied up in software alone than many of these other service providers do in their entire tool chest. Throw in the CNC machines (machining centers, lathes, turn-mill machines, grinders, wire EDMs - many of these are at least $150K), extremely skilled labor, tooling, raw materials, outside services (heat treat/ coating), healthcare, 401(k)... Oh yeah, a fine action like a BAT/ Borden has a multitude of choices the end user can make - therefore they are not mass produced.

I don't see how they do it, even for $2K ea, but I'm sure glad they do. I'm certain it's a labor of love. I'll support them if I'm able.

I visited the Remington booths at the last DSC convention. I talked with the rep's for their custom shop & they sell new blue-printed 700 actions to your spec's complete with pined recoil lug. They even handed me one to look at. The down side is they retail for over a $1,000 - about $1,200 IIRC. I was also surprised that Remington mfg's the Dakota #10 single-shot actions & they had those on display also. The #10 caught most of my attention. Just FWIW...
