.20 Creedmoor?

Anybody built one yet? Im feeling the need for speed and thought it might be good for launching 55gr Bergers.

It should be faster but I’m not sure how much. The main attraction is I already have dies and a bunch of Creedmoor brass. I’d just need a different bushing. I saw on another forum a guy ran the quick load numbers and with RL26, the Creedmoor would do about 3950 with the 55.

My first concern would be the bullet flying apart at that speed!!

I can make my 20-250 AI shoot 55 bergers at 4000 fps... BUT.... the accuracy is at 3770.... so I didn't need the extra speed.... besides... even if that extra speed was somewhat accurate.. it would only make a slight elevation difference way out there past 600 yds.... and who really shoots that far that often. I don't have to even adjust my elevation turrets until the coyote is past 400 yds... but then again.... how many people really would use that high speed... flat trajectory anyways.

I thought about a 20-30TC, find a nice used Icon and use a hundred of my 30TC brass.

I shot a few 20-250 rounds through mine last year. I'll dig out the sample numbers on mine. With the barrel life in them that's not a real inducement to shoot many rounds for educational purposes like we can with the non-overbore guns.

The .204 Berger 55's are a long sleek bullet. Just sitting still, they look like a cruise missile doing Mach4 so you'll need a 8 or 9 twist barrel and when pushed at 4000fps they're leaving the end of the barrel around 360,000 RPM, depending on twist rate, which is a lot to ask from a bullet.

My 20-250 wears a 26in Krieger 8tw and it shoots really well right around 3700 with RL16 in necked down Lapua 22-250 brass. Bullet RPM is still around 320,000. I know I could push them faster with RL26 but I'd have to be standing on it pretty hard to hit 4000fps. Barrel life in these overbore 20 cals isn't very good. I'm assuming the throat will be toast somewhere, hopefully, around 600 rounds. If it goes more, great, but if it ends up being less I won't be shocked at that either.

I have a 20 BR and have always thought that it was the practical max I now have a 20Dasher and feel that it will be a donor for another caliber in a short time. It’s the law of diminishing returns I think when you get to the 20BR. My favorite 20….the Vartarg which is at the other end of the spectrum!

I would agree. I think there is definitely a point where it's just to much of a good thing.

If I thought I needed more than a 20-250 could offer the only other big 204 I'd consider would be a 20x47Lapua.

For shooting up to the 40 grainers a 20 Practical, aka 20-223, is always an extremely good choice. I had a 204 Ruger when I had my 20-250 built then shortly after having it built I sold my CZ 204 Ruger and went one step smaller than 20 Practical and had a 11tw 20-222 built to shoot up to the 40's but if I was just going to have one 20 cal it'd most likely be a 20 Prac.

If the OP has a need for speed maybe consider building a 11tw 20 Practical. In a 24-26 inch barrel you'll be able to shoot the 32-35gr bullets 4000-4000+ fairly easy and it'll feed through any action with zero issues.

I have a 204 and 204AI which I think run out of steam with much above the 40's and I wouldn't try to push beyond a 45grn with that size case. I chose to build a 20x47 to run the 55 - 63grn bullets.

Small primer and small flash hole brass covers my concern about premature case life on account of primer pockets holding up.

In my opinion... the only reason to build a Hot Rod 20 is for fur harvesting when average shots are past 300 yds with at least 55 Bergers. Inside 300 yds...then just stick to a 204. But for further shots... the higher speeds with heavy bullets are a dream come true for super flat trajectories. My 20 has the very same wind drifts and drops as my 22-243AI at 600 yds... after that, the 22-243 AI holds up a little better... but not much. These two calibers will be the last ones to leave my clutching hands...LOL. I don't know how many shots have went through my 20... but ALOT.... and it will still shoot the end out of a coke can at 600 yds.... it's my #1 Fur Getter.

From reports I've seen on this forum, it appears that something in the 3750 FPS zone is where most (nearly all) folks are finding their accuracy node with the 55 grain Bergers. Or at least that's the case in the larger capacity cartridges. That being the situation I'm not sure if there's a compelling reason to go much larger than a BRA, Dasher or similar case.

It's unfortunate Nosler hasn't/didn't finish developing the "20 Nosler" they submitted a print for and actually come out with it because if it had decent brass it could have been a really fun 20 cal.

The 20 Nosler is a lengthened 22 Nosler, probably designed that way so you can't chamber a 20 in a 22 Nosler, and has just a tiny bit more case capacity than a 20 BR so it's not really all that overbore. It has a rebated rim so it uses a small 223 size bolt face and will work in standard 223 AR platforms as well.

I'm not really sure what happened at Nosler because a few years ago when they first started talking about this new 20 Nosler they were going to come out with Nosler even had a special 20 Nosler web page.

It's kind of weird because you can get a Pacific Tool and Gauge 20 Nosler reamer, Redding has 20 Nosler dies available and Nosler even has published load data for a 20 Nosler but to my knowledge they've never had any brass available for it. I've seen where a few people have built 20-22Nosler's but that's just a necked down 22 Nosler and isn't the same thing.

My guess is there brass didn't hold up to there expectations out of the 20 Nosler.
They definitely put the cart in front of there horse on the 20.
Kinda screwed the pooch so to speak just like freebore on there 28 and 30

Maybe they can sub-contract the making of 20 Nosler brass to ADG, Lapua, or Alpha but the chances of that happening are probably slim to none though.

In the event that any of those three ever do, I'd like to be put at the top of the list for 3-500 pcs please. I just happen to have a spare Krieger 20 cal barrel sitting on the shelf too.

Personally, I think the 20 Practical (20-.223 Rem) does all I want a .20 caliber to do -- hit ground squirrels and P-dogs out to about 400.
