20 cal barrel

I think the deal is, are the barrels REALLY 12 twist?????????

Just because they tell you it`s a 12 twist, doesn't guarantee it.....

Personally I don`t shoot anything but 32`s in a 12 twist, but I bought 11 twist barrels for all my 39 gr. stuff.....

Doesn't mean it won`t work, just that I don`t happen to do it that way......

You need to try it for yourself, don`t let others tell you that it won`t... it isn`t their rifle, it might work.......It might not.

Good luck with your project.

Phil.
I agree with Phil on this. Just because a barrel is marked as a 12 twist doesn't mean that it really is. Clearly, if you order a new barrel you may be smart to get a 10 or 11 twist to be on the safe side.

Phil is right.

A true 12 twist will shoot 26 barnes-to-39 sierra's
However some 40-50% will not shoot the various 40's don't chance it and waste your $

32 V-Max or Zombie or Nosler dogtowns.
R-10X is the go to powder, X-Terminator, LT-32 are second and third to try , if it won't
shoot a 32 with R-10 it won't shoot period.

R-10X
32 Zombie or V-Max
Hornady brass
Federal 205's
1/2 MOA or better out to 300 if no winds.

Lots of R-10X vary, I don't consider this load a Coyote killer. Splash

Target is from 2012 off my tailgate with a bi-pod.

Green Mountain 25" x 1.060 blank.
I put that same barrel on a martini cadet 20 Ackley bee. shoots 32 zmax 1/2 groups all day. I just recently checked the barrel with a borescope and the lands are gone in the first 3/8 of an inch . But it still shoots. I've ordered 5. X Caliber barrels 11 twist. Just finished putting 1 on a martini in some sort of rimmed 20 vart targ. After having both barrels I wouldn't hesitate to buy more x-calibur but I wouldn't buy another green Mountain. Sorry

That is your choice. I will let you know how this one shots after i get it finished and get some ammo loaded up.
Do you do your own barrel work or hire it out?

I did my own. I shouldn't be so hard on GM. It was in stock, inexpensive, the right barrel diameter so I didn't have to turn it and it does shoot well. I might be to blame for the land wear from when I cream of wheat fire formed. on your 20p I shoot 24.5 of AA2015 behind a 40gr vmax out of a pacnor barrel. love that gun and i'm going to build another next

Measuring your twist is sound advice. Some barrel manufacturing processes produce twists different from what was intended, it appears.

I have experience with two Twenty VarTarg barrels that have 12" twists, as close as I can measure (next one from the same supplier came out 11.5" - glad it wasn't 12.5"). The 12" twists will shoot the 39 Sierra well - my go-to woodchuck/prairie dog bullet. For target, one seems to shoot better with the 35 Berger; the other with the 40 Berger. Neither seems to perform well with the 40 Hornady. Your results may vary.

I pulled the trigger (so to speak)on a 20 cal barrel in 1-12 twist. Wonder what bullets to try first and how many i will need to see if they are accurate? Suggestions for bullets? i nave some mixed brass that i can sort if there is a best brass. ( excluding Lapua) i don't have any and with as much other brands that i have i will make something else work. Suggested loads to start?
I have had a 20 tact for 7 years 1in 12 twist. all I shoot is 32gr vmax and nothing is safe out to 400yds! I use h-335 and barrel is getting worn so now I use 27gr 335 and a mag primer for 4085fps. just got back from rabbit shoot and only miss I shot and that was at 485yds. any rabbit 300yds or less were goners. all my friends love what this gun does to them.

The .20 Tac. definitely has a place in the small cal. world......I had a Dakota that i let go......:(

It will be replaced with a .20-223AI:eek:

I have the bushing die, and Lapua brass is everywhere, so why not.........

Glad you`re enjoying your .20Tac.

I have a Rock Creek 12 twist VarTarg that lasers the 32gr Z/VMax. I had a factory Savage that didn't like the 40gr VMax at all but was PD death with 32gr SBKs. Replaced the factory barrel with a custom Pac-Nor 1:11 in .204R and it shoots the 40s now with no issue. It surely is a fine line with the 40s and the 1:12 IMO.

I have a Savage 12 LRPV in .204 Ruger, and was about to start some load development work, when I found this thread. So far with factory ammo, I give an edge to the Hornady 40 gr Vmax, over the 32 gr. Specs say 1:12 twist, does anyone know if Savages tend to run true to spec, re twist?

Either check it with the cleaning rod method or just load and shoot.

The load and shoot is the only true method, as far as I`m concerned......
