109 Long Range Hybrid vs 110 A-TIP

For sure - the craziest part for me is that I had the freebore in this barrel specifically cut for 115 dtacs but i just couldn’t make them shoot well (.5’s consistently for multiple 5 shot groups at 100-300). on a whim decided to try 105’s jumping a mile and they were immediately better. not like i’m shooting .1’s or anything like some guys here but met my expectation for my setup.

as an engineer, this kind of stuff drives me nuts, but as a pragmatist i’m going to go with what is working.

I set my free bore for the 115 and it was too long for the 110 SMK's, 110 A tips .... way too long had to set back a thread.... jim

115 Berger and 115 dtac seem to play well together, with the dtac requiring the deeper freebore of the two. 110 smk (and apparently the Atip, thanks Jim) are shorter bearing/long nosed bullets that come close to working in freebores that are on the longer side for "normal" bullets. I have a 7 twist chambered in a BRA deep throat "Linda" that I messed with heavies early last season. I need to get back to trying some new ones, but I kind of liked the 115 vlds. They don't have the greatest numbers for the weight, but they sure get bumped around less.

Got to test my new set up and I'm breaking in a new Brux 7.83 twist, plus fire forming to get some rounds through it so I tried the A Tips same load as I used in the 7 twist and it spit out an .070 ..... I kind of warming up to them....lol... jim

How do the 110smk shoot? Do they have any advantage over other similar bullets?

The 110 smk at .617 G1 (which most guys report is trued up) theoretically is "the best" in 6mm because of the combined velocity you can push it (higher than the 115 dtac) but a high enough improvement in BC that the slow down in velocity from the 105 (and now 109) class bullets is more than offset. That said, everything I've read about them is that guys either love them or hate them on a barrel by barrel basis. So if they shoot, you're in business, if not, you're out of luck on a 2k bullet lot purchase... I haven't been willing to gamble on them yet personally, but maybe tomorrow =)

i shoot the Berger 108.

I am not cool :)

I can get the 110SMK to shoot pretty good but not as good as the 110 A tip. The SMK flies 2min flatter from my 100 yd. zero to a 1000 than a 105 trimmed and pointed does almost a 100FPS faster. I have not tried the A tip yet but to be fair I will come spring and both at the same day..... jim

Just to clarify - you’re saying the smk has higher velocity at same charge than a 105? Is the bearing surface substantially smaller? I wouldn’t expect that based on weight (obviously).

No I said the 110 SMK shoots the flatter than a 105 that is going almost a 100FPS faster, nearly 2 min. flatter. a 105 at 2998 verses a 110 SMK at 2914.... jim

Hoping tomorrow to put these on paper at 6-800 yards depending on the wind and time. Will report back. And once I can get my hands on some 110 ATIPs I will give them a go as well. If anybody has any results from trying them both I’d love to hear your results.

Well, I was able to put some rounds down range yesterday. I was less than pleased to say the least. Over 3 inch groups at 400 yards. When I had first loaded them I noticed they seated a lot easier than the 107 SMK. I measured the neck before and after seating it the size stayed at .267 inches. This morning I sized some brass with a .266 bushing and was able to shoot 5 out to 704 yards earlier. Much different result, I was able to shoot a 3 inch 5 shot group at 704 with some light to moderate mirage. I had 5 left over of the .267 bushing loads and it was over an 8 inch spread at that distance. I am still trying to nail down if too light of neck tension was the cause or if I have some other random issue going on.

How fast are you trying to run them? I had them to 2960 out of a 6br imp. but they will not shoot up there for me seem to do better at 2890 - 2920 in a 7 twist barrel.... jim

@johara1 I am running them at 2850 out of a 27 inch 7.5 twist bartlein. I have never been able to go past 2940 without pressure signs even using 105 hybrid. So I run these on the lower node so I don't have trouble in the rain.
