1:8 Krieger 22-250Ackley chambered for 53 VMax
Everything is ready to go for the chamber cutting and just wondering if the 53VMax will be accurate @ 3800 fps...maybe faster !
Anyone shooting the 53Vmax at 3800 fps or faster ?
 
Wow, you could shoot heavier bullets with that twist or go to a 14 twist with 53gr. bullets , either way it will work very well with an 8 twist.

The 53 V-Max is longer than the normal 53gr bullet (0.830" long), and it needs a 12" or faster twist.

My preference for the 53Vmax is becuase it's has been very accurate and fur friendly in the past - that was @ 3400 fps in a 223Rem
I'm not looking for more then 3800 fps unless it continues to perform at even higher velocities.
Heavy bullets are not desired for my application becuase it is being used for fast off-hand field hunting and I need a flat shooting load to reduce range guesse-timating
In the past, the 223 with 53Vmax has been great on coyotes with no spinners or run-aways.
 
Time of flight for an 80 grainer at 3300 or so is still decent.

Have you ever tried the heavies in a 22-250 AI? I'm not being smart, just an honest question. If you haven't, I'd recommend giving them a whirl after you have an acceptable 53 grain load worked up. You might end up sticking with the 53's anyways, but the 80's can be an eye opening experience when you get past 400 yds or so.
 
I have a 223 pet load at this time,,, Berger 73 gr. with N140 = 2800 fps , very much on target when the distances are known.
The 53gr. in this same rifle @ 3400 fps is much flatter and is always on target even when the distances are being guess-timated.
I'm working working with distances under 350 yards.
Glad to hear the 53gr. Vmax will perform in a 1:8 twist...the 22-250Ackley will be a great flat shooting package.
 
Why? Just echoing what others said. If you wanted to shoot the sub 55s, a 1:12 or 1:14 was a better choice. A bullet traveling 3800 fps from a 1:8 twist has 342,000 rpm! Any minor imperfections in a bullet are going to be found shortly. I have a 1:8 28" 22-250AI. The smallest bullet I have ever shot is the 69 SMK. I can drive them to 3600 plus. Definitely not fur friendly. The 75 AMax and the 80 SMK are my long range choices.

I knew the 53Vmax doesn't work with the 1:14 and needs a 1:8 too 1:12 to stabilize properly.
My factory Tikka Sporter 223 has a 1:8 barrel and shoots the 53Vmax vey accurately.
 
If shoots well, then it shoots. 300,000 plus is a lot of rpms. Hornady recommends a 1:12 twist for the bullet (per the MidwayUSA web site). If the bullet has a thick enough jacket then it will stay together. If not, you get the puff. Hope it works for you. Best wishes, Tim

I'm aware of the possibility that the 53Vmax might perform differently at higher velocities with the 22-250 Ackley verus the 223
I just liked the 53Vmax so much that I will sacrifice velocity to maintain its performance.
Realize now that a 1:10 or 1:12 twist might have been a better choice.

My last 22-250Ackley was a 1:14 loaded with 52Berger target bullets and accuracy was excellent.
It was loaded at 4000 fps, this combination almost tore coyotes in half...very destructive on hides.
 
My 220 Swift (12 twist) has no issues at that velocity shooting the 53's. I just worked that load up this past fall and can't wait to use it on chucks in the spring! I hope they are as explosive as the 50's and 55's.

What load do you have.

I loaded up a bunch of test loads with 4007-ssc for my .220 Swift, but the weather folded before I had to test the loads.

Fur friendly??? In a 7 twist 223ai running at 3600 they were far from fur friendly lol. When I shot foxes with them inside 300 yards with a 22-250 7 twist it would turn their innards...outards to say the least. Its an awesome bullet though, they would flatten ground hogs at any range
 
CDNHOTSHOT--Fast, flat and real fur freindly is the 204R shooting 32gr BLITZKINGS at 4000fps. WE are sending 87 to auction next week and not one has a stitch of thread in them.
 
I just got thru breaking in my new barrel (22-250ai) McGowen 9 twist and after fire forming 50 pieces of Nosler brass I had some very good groups. The best was @ 300 yards using the max load as listed in Nosler's load book 7.

3/4" at 300 yards from a wooden bench. 25 degrees , 4,200 elevation. 200 was even better.

I know why you are now using this bullet in the fast twist. The 9 twist 250 also shoots the 75 HP Hornady's good (H4831sc), 69 Noslers (Varget) also.
But the best was with the 53's running 3943 fps in a McGowan 26" 22-250 ai barrel with 60+ rds thru it.
Can't wait for the Rock Chuck/Coyote first hits!

53Vmax is an outstanding bullet - how far are you from the rifle lands?
At 3900 fps there is virtually no range estimating required to 350 yards - lazer fast !
