1.25 straight barrel question...

Judd

Gold $$ Contributor
I am wanting to go with a 1.25 straight barrel but I am being told a standard Rem700 action isn't beefy (yeah scientific explanation :) ) enough to adequately support it and I would need a barrel clamp (another bad explanation but hopefully you know what I am saying).

Is this accurate? If so I will just go with a slightly smaller barrel but really would prefer the straight.

Thanks!

how long will the barrel be? That has quite a bit to do with how much leverage moment the barrel will exert on the action.

I was thinking 28" but if it would make a difference I would consider going as short as 26".

Thanks!

I run straight 1.250 28 & 30" barrels on a lot of XP-100's and 700's and fully float them front to back with no problems at all...

Judd,

I think that there is always a better option than "this is what I have currently", but I don't think you would have any problem hanging a heavy bbl on that rem 700 as you plan. If you are on a budget, and need to stick with the 700, one I would thing I would id is definitely epoxy in one of those aluminum single round loading ramps into the bottom of your action to give it just a little bit more stiffness. Or, you can sleeve the action as well if you are willing to take that step. I have a .300 win mag prone rifle that has benefited from both of those mods. Good luck on your project!
