Action Question

Hello fellas,

I am just wondering if a standard remington 700 long action is stout enough to support a straight contour barrel. Hope this isn't a stupid question.

Thanks,

Matt

It will depend on barrel diameter and length. Though with proper bedding, and maybe bedding the first few inches, it should be able to support a straight barrel as long as it isn't super long. I would think it would support a straight barrel around 22"-24" without too much of an issue as long as it isn't larger than a 1.250 diameter. Though I think anything larger would probably benefit from a more robust action design.

I have a shooting buddy with a Rem 700 and a straight 1.150 barrel 22" long in .223, and it shoots well.

And no, it's not a dumb question. I actually look forward to what others have to say as well. I am curious as to how long you can actually go.

I would agree with kenny474. If your barrel doesn't exceed the 1.250" diameter and more than 26" in length you will be okay. The recommendation of bedding the first 1.5" to 2.0" in front of the recoil lug will give you the stability that your action will need to balance the internal harmonics and vibration. Have you decided on a caliber?

Hello fellas,

Thanks for the info! I think i'm going to build a 6.5-284, it will be my first semi custom rifle. ::) I can't decide between a straight contour 1.25 or a HV taper. I don't plan on shooting in any competitions, I just really enjoy shooting (small groups :D) ha. Any idea what Krieger's lead time is on ordering a barrel?

Thanks,
Matt

Check Kriegers Online Inventory. They might have a barrel that your looking for in stock and you would have it in a month, if not shorter.

Matt, I suspect you'll be happier and the rifle will balance better with the HV taper or a similar one like the MTU taper or the heavy Palma. Bruno's usually keeps those in stock. www.brunoshooters.com

Hello all,

Thought I would tell you all that I have a Krieger coming from Burno's. I decided on a 31 inch, HV taper in 6.5mm, think I'm going to have it chambered in 6.5-284. Once I have everything rounded up, I'm going to take it up GA Precision and let them work there magic, I live a little over an hour south of their shop. Does anyone have thoughts on bottom metal, the action I bought doesn't have any.

Thanks,

Matt

I would go with no magazine and an ADL type trigger guard with a solid stock and an aluminum filler piece for the loading ramp. Anyuthing you can do to add some rigidity is a good thing. You might even consider sleeving the action. Brownell's has a good sleeve from John Loh.

German,

I think that would be my best bet, however I am wanting to use this rifle for a varmint/target gun. A repeater I think would be better for me. I've been looking and Badger and PTG make solid steel bottom metal, would that add any ridigity to a BDL style stock? Thank you for the wisdom.

Thanks,

Matt Horn

Matt, I don't think you can increase rigidity through the bottom metal. If you want a repeater and rigidity, you can still sleeve the action with either a conventional sleeve with a mag cutout or simply glue it into a tubegun which is the ultimate in rigidity. I don't know what your current stock plans are, but it might be worth a look. www.competitionshootingstuff.com
