JEWELL TRIGGERS -- Future Prospects

Here's a pic of one of the triggers ( HBR series ) I fixed after a holed primer and a 'back up' incident. Most won't break the top sear connector bar unless the pin tip clearance is pretty excessive. This one was a 700 that hadn't been bushed and had .005-.006 pin tip clearance. The spring is also wonked up because of this. The lever with the rounded end (where the small triangular lever articulates) was cracked. The triangular lever had fragmented...the pieces are probably still in low Earth orbit.

As you can see from the picture of another of that style trigger I serviced, a good sized chunk of the top connector piece is missing. While the bolt shroud covers that area (obviously)....you know where your face is.

A seller here had scooped up a bunch of Jewell HBR series triggers after they closed and was selling them here as BR series at a premium price. If you're buying a new/used Jewell, remember that just because it will go to 1.5-2 oz, doesn't mean it's a BR series. Do your homework and be safe.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I often see a change in ownership is followed by a major price increase to recover the purchase price in the first year. I now have three B'nA BR models and will leave the Jewells' to those willing to cannabilize for spare parts.

It would seem that an existing trigger company could have sale success by cloning the Jewell triggger and use that name as a model designator.

The Timney 'Jewell' trigger, the Trigger Tech 'Jewell', etc.

Agree 100%. One of the bigger hurdles for someone is insurance so an existing trigger mfg picking up Jewell just seems to make a ton of sense to me. If the price was just decent, say about $100 over what Jewells were selling for before...they'd pretty much sell themselves by name alone. That assumes the quality is equal to the old ones, of course.

I've considered looking into it deeper but just a lot of liability to making and selling triggers is all that has stopped me...I think.

I think I'd look into melonite or TiN coating everything but otherwise, the design was very good. Maybe tighten up dimensions in a couple of areas if feasible but it was a proven product that wasn't broken. No need in re-inventing it...just re-introduce it.

Pretty sure that Larry Scott would be my first dealer, too. He sold a crap ton of Jewll triggers over the years.

I have a couple of Jewells and Shilens, comparable.....

I agree in performance...but not so much in adjustment.

Learned real quickly, after my first Shilen install....in a glue and screw.... that you better get it adjusted before glue in....LOL.

There were a lot of in-and-out tweeks to that trigger to get it adjusted to a creep free 2 oz....maybe an Oh-Bomb involved too.

A very good alternative may well be the Jard Ultra Match trigger.

If you look at the schematics, they use a very similar 'landing gear' type of collapsing arrangement. The toggle lever (as they refer to it) is pretty beefy. It comes with a bolt release lever but that would be easy to d/c using if the action has a side bolt release. When I talked with one of the principles at Jard, he mentioned they had duplicated the geometry of the Jewell trigger. The fact that they can be disassembled for servicing ranks right up there, too.

I've got a goodly stash of Jewell's. But I'd love to try a Jard, just to see.

I am not far from selling mine. While they are still valued and parts are nonexistent it’s a no brainer to move the only one I have down the road and move to something else
