bolt lube - Ballistol!!!

Had some "Frog Lube" available because I use it on my pistols.

Works great as a bolt lube.

Since olive oil and other mixes were mentioned above I'll add :
This is a very light weight grease that has no smell and I have used successfully for years to lube bolts etc. Also used it to size 30BR from 6BR and it was smooth and caused no problems. Extremely easy clean up and I can't imagine what temp is required to thicken it. It's Mercedes Benz SPEZIALFETT "Special Grease" (typical German description that basically tells you nothing.) It is synthetic and as I said very light weight. Part # 001 989 84 51 10
It's actual purpose at one time was to lube a steering shaft going thru a rubber boot to stop squeaks. I am sure it was/is used for other parts but it's p/n will change. Do not confuse it with wheel bearing grease (which is green and much thicker).
Bottom line it works great for me.

I use just white lithium grease out of an aerosol can. I just spray it on a paper towel and wipe it one with my finger.

Yeah, this is one of my favorite lubes. I think it is just soap though my spray lithium is not without a sloth like odor as well. Anyway, I was proud of learning how effective this was as a bolt lube and introduced it to Walt's action. His gun absolutely did not like it. His action has some type of coating on it that does not like a lot of lubes.

I am going to try to get some complex synthetic lithium to try.
On another note, an Amsoil product (not sure which) has been catching on in the pistol community here for cleaning and lubricating.

One mans stink is another mans cologne. When my wife smells Hoppes #9, she knows we're going somewhere nice. My daughter calls it "good ole deddy smell".

Since the mention of Amsoil, I use a modified version of commonly suggested neck turning lube, a mix of STP and Amsoil 5w-30. I wiped it on the bolt in my BAT one day and liked it. So thats what works for me.

Wrong product, wrong application.
Strip your rifle completely clean with a shower of break cleaner..and air compressor with blow gun.
Clean everything off it, clean barrel absolutely spotless, chamber, and definitely get inside the raceway with a toothbrush, chemical resistant bottle brush is best for action scrubbing.
Clean it out spotless with break cleaner.
You need an application of a product like this.

Then grease on special areas, oil on others.
clean off all extra with compressed air..
A gun requires coatings on parts, not sitting in globs of products

Kelbly's sells some green bolt grease thats really nice but i think its made for aluminum actions

Was having this problem years ago , and decided to try something ; Not of the shooting world . Got a very small eye drops bottle and filled it about halfway with white Lithium grease , and topped it off with good old fashioned red ATF . Mixed it well , and that has been my bolt lube for about seven years now . It's thick enough not to run all over when applied , to all those small areas on the bolt , like the Lead Ramps on the Lugs , and in the area of the "Cocking Cam". As always ; with most gun applications , less is more .

I saw a photo of a german tiger tank parked in snow. Men were working on the bogies. A large can of Ballistol was in the picture. Looks like could have been Russian winter.... Might tell you something about if it works in very cold temps.... Ballistol in my book is a wonderful lubricator...

forgot to add... Ballistol is one of my least favorite smells in the entire f'ing universe... It's just awful. lol!

Won't use it. Stinks horrible. Especially on a bolt with my face down on the gun for hours. No way.

Lucas CLP is my new favorite. And it smells wonderful. Like incredible.

Super Slick from Lowes is also a great bolt slick and dries completely. Smells like oranges.

There's plenty of products that fill the bill and work great. Been using Ballistol for a long time. Works great on my bolt for me.....and the smell....well it reminds me of my old Girlfriend.

I use a Kroil product with silicone in it… Sili-Kroil… I use it to clean the firing pin and spring.. wipe it off then the outside of the bolt and wipe it off… I use Lithium Grease mixed with moly -d… a tine bit behind bolt lugs… I dont attract sand and other crap in the wind anymore. Borden Actions…. Dont mess around

The smell of Ballistol doesn’t bother me nearly as bad as it does some of you, but plain old synthetic motor oil works great and a quart lasts virtually forever.

Bolt Lube, Mil-Comm TW25B. No smell -90F to 450F.
Does not attract dirt.
