6mm Cartridge

accurate= 6PPC or 6BR

fastest= 243 or 243 AI

straight forward= 6BR is one of the least finicky cartridges.

that can be tied into long range varmint hunting= 243 Win or AI is best suited because with the appropriate rifling twist rate you can shoot lighter bullets for short/mid range and heavier 105gr bullets for long range hunting if you prefer.

Many have recommended the 6XC and I recommend against it. I have gone through about six, 6XC barrels now and it seems like I am usually battling some sort of brass/sizing die/reamer compatibility issues that result in a bunch of problems that usually cost money to fix.

The 6mm Creedmoor is literally the same cartridge as the 6XC except it is standardized and doesn’t have multiple versions/generations to deal with. If you want a 6XC then do yourself a favor and get the 6mm Creedmoor.

6mm Rem AI
Called a 6BRA…. That is of course if you are talking about the original 6BR leading to the Norma version…
The 244 Remington and the 6 Remington are a close match and perhaps offer a touch better barrel life than 243 variants…
For my own use I use a 6BR that offers barrel life, easy loading for anything 85gr to 108gr with deadly accuracy out to 1’000 though I would never make that shot with my “Dog Gun” just to ethical as at that range a “6” of any sort can make a non-lethal shot…

Which one is the most accurate, fastest, straight forward, that can be tied into long range varmint hunting?
6x284 (8 Twist)
Will sling 115's easily between 3300 and 3400 fps with a 30 inch barrel
105 Lapua's are one hit wonders at 600
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can easily shoot 1 Mile (better than most due to less recoil)
It may take you 3 tries on a P-dog at 1 Mile, (if there is wind variance)
Expect from 1500 to 2000 rounds useable barrel life

Jeez Guys, long range, flat shooting, Varmint rifle

Question, what is long range? Many of the bullets do not even expand at all on a Rock Chuck, must less a p. dog!

Couple of suggestions if you want to kill stuff.

Again, what range are you shooting and what are you killing?

Don’t sweat it. Nobody’s really interested in helping the OP anyway. Every thread becomes an excuse for people to talk about their own stuff.

Hengehold, I see you are in Va. So, you are probably speaking of Chucks and Coyotes.

You need to build the rifle around a good killing varmint bullet, and a lot of target bullets just punch holes though the chuck and they crawl off.

Depending on your range:
6 BR with zero to .050 freebore will sling the 55g Nosler ballistic tips at 3900, and you will probably need a small base sizer to shoot this pressure with H335 and AA2230 with Rem 7 1/2 primers. Groups are around 3/4" at 300 yds in my rifle.

If you could find a 6 BRX or 6 Dasher with very short to .050 freebore, the velocity on the 55's is 4050-4100, and some barrels that are long, get 4200 fps.

I did not recommend V max bullets due to their pressure ring being .2435 which will probably be the same as the chamber, meaning that they will not chamber.

The 6 x 47 Lapua with short freebore will push the 70g TNT and 70g Nosler ballistic at 3700 fps, has to be short freebore to get the accuracy.

Now kick it up a notch, the 243 AI with 28" short freebore reamer pushes the 70g TNT at 3800 at a minimum, same for the Nosler ballistic tip. 68g Bergers expand very well, on par with the 70g Nosler.

The mack daddy is the 6 Rem AI where you shoot bug holes at 4100 fps with 70g Nosler ballistic tips with Win 760, Rem 9 1/2 primers. Same reamer cuts 10 twist with zero freebore, pushing the 70g Nosler at 3980 fps. The 80g Sierra blitz is another fantastic killing bullet, unlike the 80g Berger which is not even in the same class as the Sierra Blitz. Velocity with the 80g sierra with R#19 or IMR 4831 is 3800 fps on a 26" barrel.

87g Vmax, 75g V max, 58g Vmax all can do a good job if you chamber has a .2440 throat. My chamber all have .2435 throat and hornady used the dies too long, where the bullet shank grew to .2435, they would not chamber in 5 barrels of mine. Hornady has to replace the dies every couple of million bullets so the bullet dia can be much less in some lots.

The Barrel life on the 6 BR shooting H335 and AA2230 is 4000-5000 rounds of super accurate shooting.

Straight to the point, I like that! Sorta the direction I am leaning. What about the 6BR vs 6CM?
In 6BR I have used 70gr Sierras with N135 powder for 3200-3300 fps. This middle of the road for pressure according to the VV loading manual. seems to shoot great groups regardless of the powder charge.

I have not used the 6 Creedmoor yet but anticipate that it is very versatile based on the extra case capacity to shoot heavier for LR. Like the 6BR, should also provide plenty of seating depth flexibility if using different weight bullets due to the long case neck.

If you're patient enough to do all the work that it takes to prepare the cartridges, I don't think anything can outshoot a tight necked 6mm PPC. Even a stock SAKO 461 Vixen with a standard neck shoots very well if you can $2500 in a rifle. The salvation is once you have the cartridges prepared you can successfully reload them 30-50 times. It's an incredibly efficient cartridge. These days I'm too lazy to do all that necessary cartridge prep and would rather work with good brass in a .223. Shoot it, clean it, resize it, load it with the powder and bullet you've found best, and you're good to go

There are those who seem to say "I don't care about ultimate accuracy. I'm looking at ultimate velocity~!" Remember that the target has a few minutes to think over whether he's going to move or duck when he hears the report~!! LOL~!

The 6XC is the easy button. Excellent brass availability, efficient on powder, low on recoil and proven at long range with excellent velocities. 105s at 3050ish is easily attainable and easily tunable with a lot of powders.
