6mm Cartridge

Best accuracy is a PPC, and every time you add a grain of capacity, you lose a little bit of that.

Don’t go beyond a BRA if extreme accuracy is your concern. Don’t go any larger than a GT if very good accuracy is good enough.

You can get decent accuracy out of anything.

Right now…. I’ve got 10 and 13.5 twist BRs as well as a 12 twist BRA and an 8 twist GT.

I'm in on the Dasher. Mines shoots in the zeros and small ones with 105 vld and 115 dtachs. Also does really well with 85 hpbt Sierra. Have several br s , with various twists. They are really hard to beat for ease of loading, getting cases, and accuracy

.243 30* Improved
I'm liking what research I just read. From what I'm reading, the 30* vs 40* shoulder brass possibly lasts longer. Barrel burner or brass longevity I don't think I need to worry about, being this gun won't be shot that much. Seems like I'm right back to the 243 Win now. To many options...

!0 years ago I finally decided to do one. After a lot of thinking I went with a plain Jane 243 in 7.5 twist. I was not disappointed . As far as throat erosion, they sell new barrels.

It's all about bullet weight and twist. 600 yards is not long range, it's mid range. 800 to 1000 yards is long range - at least according to NRA competitions. I have a 6xc for mid range set up for 87 gr bullets ( mid range0 and a 6 mm Rem. set up for 105 gr bullets (long range and am very satisfied. These are/ were my prairie dog guns.

For a number of years I fielded a Holland custom rig in .243 Ackley using the Nosler 70gr BT. Great for PD's, but as most of my shooting is here in Orygun on ground squirrels and rockchucks, I sold it here on AS. It wore a Holland brake, so I could see all my hits/misses and was accurate enough for work out to 800 yards.....the longest shot I made with it was a large dog sitting on his mound at a lasered 842 yards.

Excellent rifle in a great LR caliber, but just a bit much for the majority of shooting I do here. Now being older, the long drive(s) to the PD states is not appealing any more, add in the price of fuel now and it just becomes something less appealing every year.

In MT for PD's, it shined:

The longest shot I pulled off with the rig was that unlucky dog at 842 yards. If we had those critters here, I'd still have the rifle. The Ackley case is sexy though, anyway you look at it. ;)

Yours truly on that 842 yard dog in MT. I think it was right around 2000:

Mike, one thing about a case based on the 243 Win, cases are usually always available and not in the 'exotic' catagory. My rifle shown was a 10T, as the primary bullet was the 70gr. A guy could do a lot worse in regard to a 6mm rat rifle, especially if you intend to put prairie dogs on your hit list. That was my choice back then, but today there's even more good choices in 6mm.

Read the articles on this sight by and about the rifles that Richard Franklin built and shot. He is a very skilled and knowledgeable gun builder and shooter. He was a fan of the 6mm AI, I don't remember reading anything he wrote about other calibers. I had a 6mm AI, 40X he built, a very fine rifle. The 6mm caliber has a very large selection of bullets and cases available that I am not familiar. Don't 'over study' it, get the rifle built with the option of changing the chamber, so many possibilities. Check it out, and good luck with your knew adventure.

Which one is the most accurate, fastest, straight forward, that can be tied into long range varmint hunting?
My 6BRX can shoot 58 gr Hornaday bullets at 3700 FPS with H322 powder. I shoot the same bullet as my std load in my 6BR at 3585 fps with 8208. H322 would probably be faster. I have the wrong twist for heavier bullets.
