Savage Barrel Removal

I've done it two ways. One way, barrel in a barrel vice (actually hardwood blocks in a hydraulic press), action wrench on the action and barrel nut wrench. strike barrel nut wrench with a hammer, I use a big heavy dead blow hammer. Action wrench is probably not needed but I find it helps if you can hold the action against the rotation of the nut.

The way I do it lately is, I got a second-hand Wheeler action wrench for Rem 700. I put it on the Savage action without the wrench handle, and clamp the Wheeler wrench head in a big vice sideways. Put an action screw or reasonable facsimile thereof through the provided hole in the Wheeler wrench and into the front action screw hole. Tighten the two big bolts down and then smack the barrel nut wrench with the hammer. Then loosen the two big bolts enough to let the barrel turn freely...when they're tight they'll bind the barrel threads.

What caliber are the takeoffs and do you want to sell them?
That's funny you ask. I was going to post to get a price check on what the new barrels might sell for. One will be a new, un-shot 204R 12T and the other 223 9T. I have not bought the 223 yet, but plan to in the next couple days. Both will be re-fitted with Pac-Nor's, in 20VT 12T and 20P 11T.

If they are installed anything like factory Remington barrels, due yourself a favor and cut a relief in the tenon just in front of the receiver and they will twist right off. Throw them in the trash and re-barrel

No, all the ones I’ve done. Remington, well try a Mauser 98

Mike why not let pac nor remove the barrels? They will ship you back the one that came off.
Is it just trying to save money on shipping?
I used a pool noodle split down the middle and slid the action in middle of it. Same way I plan on doing it again

Yep. pinching pennies and simpler to ship!!

Taking a barrel off a Savage and installing another barrel isn’t rocket surgery.
Vise holds the action in an action wrench, barrel nut wrench, 3/4” breaker bar, torque wrench, go gauge, scotch tape.
If there’s anything difficult it’s disassembling the Savage bolt. The BAS, need a big Allen wrench; ejector- need a drift pin; and don’t turn either end of the firing pin assembly unless you know what they do.

Never claimed it was rocket surgery as you call it. I just haven't ever done it and with all the input posted I'll take my mechanically inclined abilities and do it myself. The only reason being, I do not want to ship two complete rifles if I don't have to. Shipping two actions is much easier and more cost effective. Who knows, I might need the tools later down the road or lend some out to someone in need.

My intent was to encourage you to do it yourself.

I had the action and nut wrench from NSS, combined with a barrel vice it made barrel changes fairly easy.
The smooth factory nuts can put up a fight.
I turned the factory smooth nut into a gauge to time barrels to a different action.

Okay, I know it's supposedly easy, but I have never done it. I'm planning to remove barrels and triggers from two Savage Model 12's and want to hear from you who have done this. I'll be ordering the tools from James from NSS asap to get the job done.
I have a Savage Action Wrench and a barrel nut wrench used once. Both were purchased from NSS. PM me if you are interested in buying.

I used the Northland tools shown above in an earlier post. Stainless model 12 single shot in .223. Barrel came off quite easy (15 year old gun). I used go/nogo gauges and put the whole thing back together in less than an hour
