Details on AR Tactical in NRA High Power (Midrange)

g. Magazine – Standard 10-, 20-, or 30- round magazines must be used. Reduced capacity magazines and “sleds” are prohibited. Magazine may not be used for support and may not touch the ground during firing or recoil. See Rule 5.2.

No sleds or 5 round mags. Again, another NRA fail in the rules. IMO it should say the round must be magazine fed but it just states the magazine must be used. I interpret it as being used means mag fed, not used as an ornament or paper weight but literally everyone else says they don't need to be mag fed because they want to use their 80s and up and the rules don't say they must be mag fed. Without mag fed being a requirement that right there dooms it for the everyday AR owner because they will get gamed by the long throats shooting heavy BC bullets.

I've competed twice with the ARTAC using 73gr ELDs mag length because my chamber won't take 80s. I shot low 590s and had fun putting in zero effort at load development and loading was a one step size, trim, load. Nothing like the mad scientist f class loading. After shooting 200.20x this was like shooting a pellet gun.

I really enjoy it because its back to the basics. Just walk to the next yardline without 100# of gear and shoot. But there is very little interest and at most 1-2 people shoot it and I don't see it growing which is a shame. I've got one in 6.5 CM that I can't bring myself to compete with because I'm afraid I'll either do worse than my .223 which would be embarrassing or I'll make a mockery of the class and clean everything....But then again, I lost to a guy shooting 80s so maybe I will...LMAO...what do you think LVL Aaron :):):).
I was saying 'used' means more than attached to the rifle over a year ago when the class was still provisional.
I surrendered to the consensus.

I want to do this for the fun of it, but also want to be competitive.

I don't want to invest in an upper then a year later have to hear someone piss and moan about how I didn't follow "the spirit" of the rules.

I'm not a gypsy medium. I don't talk to spirits :D

@Nature Boy there's a pretty simple solution to that.

Get pretty much any barrel with a Wylde chamber, same as the guys that shoot NM Service Rifle have been doing for the last 15-20 years.

It'll eat 75-77gn mag length ammo all day long, *and* have plenty of room to seat 80s plenty far out there. Then you're good either way.

It'll even shoot 90s. Maybe not quite as optimally as a dedicated chamber in a bolt gun... but then again, you don't see people doing that with anything but a *single shot* bolt gun - they ain't feeding from a magazine there either. Honestly, with a 20" barrel, I kinda doubt you'll be able to run the 90s fast enough to be really worth the headaches as compared to a nice easy-to-tune 80gn load.

That makes sense. Thanks!

I can think of two reasons why it would not be legal; A-piston and B-side charger. But it's probably alright to use.

I believe the feeding from a magazine thing is more to do with forcing people to use mag-length ammo, not the fancy Super Hyperdyne Hybridized Long Boat Nose bullets. I have lots of mag-length .308 ammo loaded with 175GR SMK-type bullets to use.

For the .223/5.56, the highest BC bullet would be the 77gr SMK or equivalent as the 80grainers will not fit in a standard magazine.

I also have an issue with allowing 6.5 Crudmoor to compete alongside 5.56 and .308 rifles. But this is for fun.
6.5 creed would not be allowed in the AR Tactical division, however that would be alllowed in Any/Any or Open

Also noticed that the NRA has updated their barrel length and scope restrictions to match the CMP's. 22" and 16x now allowed
Can you point me to that rule change? I received an email on 03/07 from Andy Farmer and he told me that, at that time, the rule was still 15X. I have been shopping for a new scope and finding a SFP 15X scope is hard without spending over a grand. Thanks in advance.

It's in the 2025 rulebook

Seen 2-3 6.5 Creedmoors being shot this past week as AR tactical.
It’s not a AR15 223 bipod anymore. I think a 6GT won the 4 day match.
I have seen lots of different combinations over the last several years, but nat a 6GT. How did it shoot? Obviously good enough for the win

What club, distance and was it a CMP or NRA match.

I am really happy that the NRA adjusted their rules to match the CMP for barrel length and scope magnification. I believe the difference was causing some confusion with some of the newer competitors.

Also, with most range is going to the shot marker targets to 22 inch barrel will very likely help some of us, especially at sea level make it to 1000 yards supersonic.

I do wish the NRA would have specified whether dialing down and taping scopes is OK or not.

Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club, NRA National mid range course 3-5-600 x2 plus 600 x 6. 2400 point agg and 6GT won tactical with 2395.

I don't know if things have changed in the last couple weeks but, I spoke to Andy Farmer a couple weeks ago. He stated that, although the scopes were limited to 15X, they were contemplating a provisional rule allowing 16X. When I asked about taping, he said words to the effect of, "we understand that CMP allows that but, we don't"

Welp, time to get an AR10.
Got two (.243 win & 6.5 CM)….. no luck yet, too much vertical at best load so far.

A couple years back I did shoot a 2388 with an 18” Wilson Arms .233 and some Nosler 77 Blems (sorted of course) from American Reloading @ 0.12/bullet.

I think I may go back to working on my 6x45 ar15 upper….. or maybe a 22” .233 with 75 grain eldm’s.
