Do you use glass vials for preloads?

Range is only 3 miles from the house, I need to set up a dedicated range loading setup
It’s really not that difficult.
That is one thing that Short Range Benchrest Shooters seem to do as a matter of course that not many other Disciplines have caught on to.

At the TackDriver, it is not uncommon for people, even shooters from other Disciplines, to be amazed at the Short Range Shooters all cleaning and loading after each target.IMG_0048.jpeg

I know 2 of the presses are sizing and seating. What's the 3rd, mandrel?

if you do, how do you transport them to the matches?
Looking for some ideas.
I use brass cartridges with powder topped off with the bullet of my liking! Seriously, for shortrange I'll preload long then seat the bullet where I want at the range, saves a ton of work, sometimes I'll take my RCBS and drop powder but the powder I use for the 6PPC and the 22PPC are pretty consistent. I know that is no help to you but hope you find what you are looking for, saw the stock/gun you sold at the tack driver, I'll look you up next year!!

So.... pardon my ignorance.

If I follow this thread correctly, ya'll are pre-loading charges?

If so, what do you find to be advantageous to this practice?

Asking because I have never seen nor thought about this

Thanks.

I shoot mostly score, so thats a 30br.
With a 30, my tune window is almost .5 grains, so I can go preloaded and not have to worry about it.

However, I bought my HBR used, so I dont know the round count. I only made 100 pcs of brass for it (of which I only have 93 left and I dont have any more pieces of brass from that lot#)
I am about to host a 100/200 yard VFS match, and I am afraid 93 rounds won't be enough to shoot the 2 yardage. I dont want to set up my chargemaster and all that for a possible 20 more rounds.

I figure just bringing my small press to resize the case real quick, and dump the powder in from vials will be easier and quicker.

Maybe it won't. I am about to find out.

Most 30br shooters (at least here in Texas) preloaded. The 30br is not as "finicky" as the ppc and the tune window is much wider.

I bought 100 glass vial off amazon.... what a mistake, a third of the vials were broke in shipping. There was fine glass everywhere when I opened the package. The glass on the vials were so thin you could breath on them and they would break. I just threw the whole thing in the garbage. This is what I use now, I found it when I built my smokeless muzzle loader. They work great and you can get different colored caps and they are priced reasonable.

Kyle Pittman is a pleasure to do business with and makes outstanding bullets, if you guys ever get board look around on his website , there are some target samples there. Also look on Hankens Rifles website and go to the forum, these guys are building .40 and .45 cal smokeless muzzle loaders and shooting them in 1000 yard br comps. Some are even building them on Borden and Bat target actions. Its amazing what these rifles are doing. Scroll down the page I listed and you will see the options.

Here is a photo of one of the options.

Before I got a chargemaster I used ziplock bags and a 6 pack cooler to carry the glass vials.

For loading at the range where the wind makes it difficult to accurately weigh powder. It is a good way to test loads and fine tune your rifle; you can load a few at a time and make instant changes. As Jackie pointed out, this is standard practice for short range BR shooters. It allows you to fine tune your load for changing conditions.

They look like centrifuge vials like we used at work. They come several sizes. Probably pricy if you buy them from a chemical supply store.
I think I paid $12 for a pack of 100 of the 4ml on Amazon and about $10 for a pack of 25 of the 10ml

I've used both glass and plastic vials, but coat the inside with dry graphite, no residual powder, just a thin coating. This helps eliminate the static build up, particularly in the plastic vials that tends to keep a few granules in the vial.

Let us know! I'm interested.

Thanks for the tip. I've used glass vials sparingly the last year because of this issue. Seems to have 1-2 granules stuck inside sometimes.

If this link to ebay isn't allowed, I apologize. I am not affiliated with this seller but have bought numerous plastic vials from him for my muzzleloader needs.

They may be too big for you guys although the 25ml isn't huge. You can mix and match sizes and he sells cases. I get the screw on lids and flat based ones. They are sturdy and seem to seal decent. I haven't had moisture issues or anything with black powder in them even from year to year.

Just thought I'd pass it on.

I use a sacrificial charge of powder and a dose of graphite. Put the cap on, shake it, pour into the next vial, tapping out the excess graphite. The powder helps embed the graphite into the pores (particularly in plastic). You only need to do this once, since the powder has some graphite already as an anti-caking, anti-static feature.
