Why the big 20s?

And this is why many of the same folks who run a big 20, are often the same ones who like to push a 224 like this as well. It is in the same camp.

Once the 22-250 brass got curtailed and I tried a 22 CM case to make a 20 cal wildcat, I also adopted straight 22 CM and like it too. Life can be short, run them both!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Honestly this is a pretty mild load we use it for fire forming and thought it shot so well we just use that for shooting prairie dogs as well. I'm sure if I wanted to look for more speed I could find it but I don't think they shoot better going any faster. I think it's best to just shoot these bullets right around 3,500 ft per second and that's about as fast as you want to go. I'm not sure they like being overspun I don't know that for a fact though

Conclusion reached. Big 20s shoot about the same as the 22BRA, 22XC, and 22CM running 62gr ELD-VT. They are all a lot of fun so pick your poison and go have some fun :)

I started with the 20 practical because I'm a wildcatter that needed a 20 cal cartridge to hunt predators in caliber restricted zones in NY state.
No way was I taking the boring road and buying a .204 ruger !
I chose the 20-250 with the 55gr bergers for my Savage Impulse Predator build because of the limited 20 cal offerings with .473 rim dimensions that feed well out of a magazine.
It knocks Em down and very little recoil if a rare follow up shot is needed.

That video does a fine job of showing the recoil. Nice work.

If you ask why my immediate thought is “why not” - granted the big overbore 20 cals aren’t practical in any sense of the word but they are fun and very impressive as far as fast and impacts. When you get into anything overbore, no matter the caliber, practical or ”makes sense” goes out the window imo. Your just venturing in the land of the unpractical.

I’m currently having a 20GT reamer being made at JGS, Im building it just to shoot a pile of 55 grain bergers I have. I think it’ll be fun and don’t mind the impractical side of overbore cartridges. I think it’s fun, to each their own….

I just took delivery of 22-6.5 PRC this summer. I’ve only taken it out a couple times but the two coyotes it dispatched were memorable impacts, talk about a thump! 70 grain accubond at 3625 fps is stout medicine.
I just put together a 20GT. Will be working up loads this next week.

The berger 55gr is the big “why“ big 20 cals get built. Run the ballistics on that pill at 3800 and pay special attention to it’s ability to buck wind.

Super accurate but not super consistent in the terminal dept on coyote for me.
I don't shoot long range with my 20-250, so I'm going to give the Hammer 41Gr HHT's a try and see if I can up the terminal effects a bit.

I’d like to know where pressure signs at on the velocity …
In real world time, across a chronograph …
