.17’s

Sex appeal goes to the 17-222.

I guess the question that first came to mind is "Are you plannig on re-barreling your L46 or using a different rifle?'. If using the L46 then mag length and bolt face keep your feet grounded in the 222/223-based family.

Hey guys,
I’ve had several 17 caliber rifles over the years, currently two Sako l46’s on 17 Rem one 17 mkIv. Question is I’m wanting a “different” 17, something bigger to shoot 30 grain bullets. My 17 Rem is a 10 twist so they won’t stabilize. What’s the opinion of the group for a bigger 17? .17-204? .17 TAC? Predator? 17 Remington Ackley improved or ??

Thanks
R.O.
I bult a17-223 shoots 30 gr bergers in one little hole. 1x9 twist. The problem is Berger stoped making that bullet. And i 300 left. L.Sherm is spot on.

My Shilen 1/10 doesn't get along well with 25 gr vmax or my 30gr Bergers. Slightly out of round bullet holes and 1"+ groups at 100. Didn't even waste bullets checking at 200, after seeing the hole shape and group sizes. 17rem.

My Cooper 21 has a Shilen 1:10, and it also won't shoot 25gr VMax.

I would like to build a 17 Nosler. I think that would be a speed demon.

I’m in the process of building a 17-204 but do not have any experience with it yet other then case forming. Forming is super easy that’s why I went this route. I use a 17 fireball FL die screwed way out to just size the neck then post firing I will use a 204 bushing die for sizing. I’m sure you could just start with the 204 bushing die but I may end up turning necks for this one so having the whole neck sized was important. My hope is to get 4000fps out of the 30s but we will see. Have all the parts except for bottom metal that should be here Thursday then off to the smith. Hope to have it ready for coyotes this fall.
17-223 Forming die is all you need. The Yotes around here hate mine. Tommy Mc

RO,
The 17 Remington is about the max case capacity you will ever need with 30gr projectiles. In fact, it might be a tad too large. Expect 3750fps with good brass life and about 1000-1100 rounds of barrel life. I have shot this combination at 600 yards on NRA high-power targets many times. I have also tested 30gr boattails and flat base projectiles at 800 and 1000 yards. 800 yards seems to be about the maximum distance to get good repeatable groups. 9 twist.......
