.17’s

Hey guys,
I’ve had several 17 caliber rifles over the years, currently two Sako l46’s on 17 Rem one 17 mkIv. Question is I’m wanting a “different” 17, something bigger to shoot 30 grain bullets. My 17 Rem is a 10 twist so they won’t stabilize. What’s the opinion of the group for a bigger 17? .17-204? .17 TAC? Predator? 17 Remington Ackley improved or ??

Thanks
R.O.

I’m in the process of building a 17-204 but do not have any experience with it yet other then case forming. Forming is super easy that’s why I went this route. I use a 17 fireball FL die screwed way out to just size the neck then post firing I will use a 204 bushing die for sizing. I’m sure you could just start with the 204 bushing die but I may end up turning necks for this one so having the whole neck sized was important. My hope is to get 4000fps out of the 30s but we will see. Have all the parts except for bottom metal that should be here Thursday then off to the smith. Hope to have it ready for coyotes this fall.

Over the years I’ve owned 17 Remington, 17-204, 17 WCH, 17 FB. I currently have a 17-223 Ackley that I’m playing with 30 grain bullets. I also have a 17 FB and 17-223. My vote goes to 17-223 for the ease of brass and sizing. It’s a single pass from 22 caliber neck to 17.

Back before the 204 case was even thought of I had a 17 Predator built and used the excellent IMI brass in 223 with Xterminator and 30 Golds, 4100 FPS was easily obtainable and very effective on crows and coyotes. Today IF I was going to build another big 17 I would definitely consider using the 204 case. Like
jcm24m said the 17PPC is in my experience the most accurate 17 with great speed you can build so also a great choice. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE 17s and have many but with today’s component availability I would probably build a 20 ppc or 20 BRA unless you have enough 17 caliber 30s to wear out a barrel.
Just my .02 ;)

I shot a .17 Remington with the 30 gr Berger bullets for coyotes for a couple of years. For the most part they worked great at 3750 fps. Occasionally a bullet would blow up on the surface. Be careful about pushing them to fast as this could go very bad quickly on coyote size targets. Shoot straight.

I would go with the 17-204 for bigger and better, IF the neck was longer.
I have come to the thoughts that it save some wear and tear on the throat with sensible use. Spoke to others with the same thoughts.
Before I build another 17FB I am going to have a hard look at a 17-222 or it’s variations.
