Seems like everytime I use Amazon or go to Walmart, I end up po. They are suppliers of last resort. Add Ebay to the list.

Follow up, I called Amazon immediately after recognizing the counterfeit calipers. They arranged for a return of the calipers and said they would make sure the cost was refunded and note the product appeared to be counterfeit for investigation.

I ordered a 6" Mitutoyo caliper from Global immediately after. Those are now on the way. (thanks for posting the previous reference in this thread)!

All of that said, I do want to say that I order a lot of merchandise from Amazon with good results. I live a long way from stores that carry quality merchandise, and I do appreciate the ability to find things online.

Case in point, I purchased some 67-layer Damascus steel Japanese style Kitchen knives that were clearly advertised as made in China. After using them for a year, I can say they are superb cutlery and an incredible value...

China can make some very hard steel, much harder than is needed for the task at times.

If anyone gets AARP Bulletin (who doesn't?) on page 32 in the newest edition is a full-page story about rampant counterfeit products popping up everywhere including Amazon. The dollar numbers are staggering.

FYI Zoro (an e commerce subsidiary of Grainger) sells the genuine Mitutoyo SR44 from Japan for ~$2.00 ea cheaper than through Grainger.

not a problem with grainer, the hole to go down is the difference in the batteries. they work better with the original mitutoyo batteries.
