How Many Patches Used When Cleaning Your Rifle?

Also, how are you plugging the chamber end?
A Sinclair chamber plug is one way. I use one when I need to soak the bore o/night.

It depends... Some rifles a lot, some not much at all. I get the question but it's like asking everyone how the ocean feels when they wade in the surf.

2-3 patches of Patch out down the barrel to remove the loose carbon, accelerator on a nylon brush, scrub about 10-15 strokes and let it soak for a few hours. Another 3-4 patches with alcohol to get the gunk out. Throat area will still have some carbon, Thorroclean on a nylon brush or jag wrapped with a patch and about another 15-20 strokes, flush with alcohol another 3-4 patches to until it shows no residue. Inspect with borescope to gauge if that process is sufficient based on round count. If not rinse and repeat. YMMV depending on cartridge and shooting discipline. Est around 20-25 patches if I had to give a number.

Keep it clean!!

I know of a guy that bought some really nice cleaning jags at a gun show. He proceeded to use one of the new jags with some Sweets 7.62 to get the copper out. After several hours of hollering and swabbing, as he was standing in a pile of blue patches, discovered those jags were made from bronze and were bleeding the blue streaks into the patches.

I slung them jags in the weeds that day.

Great responses so i guess im ok with my 20 patch cleaning. It seems when i see patches mostly white i give it one more 15 stroke sequence with nylon brush and yep patches black again back to more patches...

Do you guys buy into the "Triangular patch" game? As i see it fitting the Jag is most important but I am a newbie.
