300 PRC load data

If max O.A.L of 3.7 is your goal and having the .215 range of freebore then I would say 30 Nosler, I like the 30-28 because you dont have to run it as hard to get the 3070-3100 node with the 215 but you will probably be just over 3.7 or right on it. But they both will do it.

I got back to messing with my PRC last week. I wanted to get back to that high node so I tried some N570. After re tuning it, I had a powder charge range and 2 seating depths that showed promise. I shot them at 1023 yards this morning. Unsorted bullets and brass, no turn neck with my chamber reamer. ADG brass and a Bat HR with a Bartlien 9 twist at 28". As usual work up to this, dont assume anything. I shot 82 and 82.3 at 30 and 50 jump with a 230 hybrid and cci 250. The velocity window is about 2990-3030. I do not know why the 82 -30 hit so much higher on target, but the 82-50, 82.3-50 and 82.3-30 all stayed in 3" of vertical. 3000+ fps with a 230 and 80 grains of powder is very efficient. Im at 400-500 rounds on this barrel and the brass is holding up great even in spite of some really hot loads early in testing. thumbnail (4).jpg

The next day 82.3 .050 off repeated for a 3" and a 4". So I have been doing cold bore testing now that Im confident in the load. The last 2 mornings I have shot one 3 shot group cold bore from a fouled barrel. I will keep doing this until I get a little more data to be sure that it repeats. Velocity spread have been around 10 fps for the first 3. Yesterday was a little windy so the group was 4" wide but under 2.5" of vertical (black marker group, I reuse the targets for other rifles too.) today was a head wind and shot about 3" tall.DSC_0180.JPGDSC_0181.JPG

Looks like the elk are in big trouble up there! Fantastic elk rifle and great shooting!

It may take an elk, my 280ai is lighter so depending on the type of hunt will depend on which I grab. I do want to know they shoot out to 1k, but I wont take a shot that far. I shoot 1k often, only missed one day the last 2 weeks. In spite of that, I still miss for unexplained reasons. You simply cant see all the conditions. 700-800 is my max. Im not telling others what to do, but I dont want my 1k testing to be a recommendation to shoot game that far.

Nail on the head Alex. It only takes one miss in one week to wound and waste an animal. Guys that shoot 1K enough know this. Conditions aren't the same at the shooting location as they are at the target in mountains or draws etc. Tricky conditions cause error but not human error. Those are different errors. Just because you can hit the 10 ring 100% of the time on a flat range with mild wind doesn't make for those conditions in the field. In fact, those aren't the conditions in the field 95% of the time.

Alex what's your thoughts on Shooters World 50BMG powder since can't find H1000 or N570. Presently 300prc with 8 twist bbl using H1000 @77.6gr with Berger 245gr ADG brass and federal magnum primers. Thanks. Steve

Hey, does anyone here have a 300PRC reamer print that matches bullet central dies or similar. Thanks in advance. Want to try this with the berger 208s and 220gr. 26" barrel

Im just starting to work with a 300 PRC. I didnt find a ton of data when I looked so Im putting some up. Barrel bore and groove dimensions do vary! Actually a lot. That has a huge effect on pressures. Work up to any loads carefully in your barrel because it may be very different. My reamer is slightly different as well, but not enough it should have a noticeable effect on pressure. Bat HR actions handle pressure better than any I have used, ADG brass is also very tough. Keep that in mind.
The rifle is a Bat HR with a Bartlien 9tw 5r at 28" in a McMillan A3.
The first powder I tried was RL23 with a 210vld .020 in . I couldnt find any info so I found a safe window on quickload using 94 grains of H2O for the case capacity. Thats what my new unfired ADG brass weighed.
72-2965
72.4-2959
72.8-2989
73.2-3024
73.6-3016
74-3062
74.4-3061
74.8-3077
75.2-3090
75.6-3113
I didn't like the look of the ladder, this was not the right powder for this barrel. I was surprised at the speeds it got though as its on the fast side for this case. The Barrel was still pretty green at this point, so as its speeds up it may not get to that upper end but at this time there was no sign of pressure.

The next combo I tried was H1000 and 230 Berger hybrids .020 off.
77-2907
77-2901
77.4-2923
77.8-2946
78.6-2950
79-2958
79.4-2971
79.8-3002
80.2-3000
80.6-3036
This ladder looked great, 2 obvious nodes, 2901-2923 held .658" of vertical at 600yds, 2971-3002 held .714". 3 shots in each node. This is the combo this barrel is going to like, 3 shot groups around each node at 1k is the next step. Then fine seating and hopefully its done. It was cold today, and the barrels at about 60 rounds. I do not know if the upper node will be do able in warm weather but I have no signs of pressure today.

I also loaded 7828ssc because I like that powder. Again with 230s.
I think I missed the window though as I went up to 75 and only got to 2842. The ladder didnt look good so I wont continue with this powder. One thing to note, the last shot of the day was a sighter I loaded with this powder it did not fire. It was 16 degrees and had sat outside for a good hour. I pulled the bullet and the powder was scorched. I was using 250s but in the future I will go to fed 215s for this powder. The 250 was not hot enough to light it that cold.

So far the 300 PRC seems to be an over achiever. The others I have built have also been that way. I am a little surprised at the velocities you can get out of this case. I'll update this post as I keep tuning.
Alex,
You can contact us for load data for BERGER BULLETS for the 300 PRC AT: Support@capstonepg.com. 8 AM to 4:30PM EASTERN TIME MON thru FRI

So I had a 1.250 straight 30" Kreiger barrel laying around. It was chambered in 300WSM and has about 300 rounds on it.

I decided to set it back to 28" and chamber it in 300PRC so I can dabble in ELR. I spun up a custom brake at 1.250 to match the barrel.

I finally got around to shoot it today. I put 5 sighters down the tube, loaded to 75.9gr N565 with a Berger 230 (roughly .010 off of lands). Then I did two ladder test at 600 yards (N565 and N570)

This round did not disappoint!

1. 79.9 - 2923
2. 80.2 - 2919
3. 80.5 - 2909

I've noticed for my rifle the H1000 was a touch too fast of a powder( I could still get to 2900ish with no pressure), When i switched to Retumbo that was just enough to get me where i wanted to be.
Load Data:
Lapua Brass
CCI 250
Berger 220LRHT
CBTO 2.915
80GR Retumbo
2968 FPS and no pressure signs!

Hi
I had 100 rounds on the barrel when I ran the test
Defiance Ruckus
Bartlein 1:9t 28 barrel
Lapua 7times fired brass
Cci br2
Berger 220 LRHT
ran the test from 76- 78.7 grs H1000 3 shots each

76.0 2782fps Sd 6.1
76.3 2798fps Sd 2.9
76.6 2805fps Sd 2.9
76.9 2813fps Sd 7.6
77.2 2831fps Sd 8.6
77.5 2837fps Sd 2.5
77.8 2844fps Sd 2.6
78.1 2858fps Sd 2.6
78.4 2873fps Sd 5.3
78.7 2885fps Sd5.3
I can’t say I hit pressure yet since I didn’t feel any consistent bolt lift!
Velocities look a little bit slow tho

That's odd indeed. My set up is basically the same. 76 grains of H1000 gets me 2980 with 215s and 2950ish with 220s. I didn't run into pressure till 79 grains. Maybe it'll take a few more rounds to speed up.
