I'm gonna be "that guy" that says to always refer to loctite by it's number, and not it's color. There are several of each color, and they're different! There are probably 6 different "green" loctite products.


@Rocketvapor - Yeah, If I know I have a good barrel, I'll just glue it in. It's permanent, but uppers are cheap and 223 barrels last forever.

Loctite 638 is what I've heard most use.

That will work. I use 620. It's good for slightly higher temps, which probably works against me if I ever wanted to take these things apart.

One of the illinois highpower guys says he whacks them out with a dowel and hammer through the receiver and he says it works with all the different loctites.

I also use dowel.
If heat isn't applied, I can't get them out with a medium strength retainer.
With low strength ones, no heat needed - just a few good whacks.

I use permatex sleeve retainer. Depending on the upper i will put the barrel in a barrel vise and use a rubber mallet to knock the receiver off of the barrel. With the sleeve retainer I do use a little bit of heat then 2-3 mallet strikes and its off.

Where on the upper are you hitting?

I will hold around the rear of the receiver to support it and i strike the area at the front that the gas tube goes through. This is not gorilla bashing it. Add a bit of heat, rubber mallet, few light to moderate strikes and they come off.

Wind was a lot more tricky today than for the original shots. For this rifle, I'll admit no improvement. Worth noting that the barrel/upper were a good/snug fit to begin with. The rifles I've seen success with before were like a hotdog down a hallway.

I take it that you felt comfortable that the wind did not significantly impact the 'after' groups?

I'd say net-net it's the same. The wind was all over the place today.. first test was pretty smooth from one direction. This range kills me at 200. If I went out to 500, put up flags, and took my time, I'd have the same size groups. We don't call it our toilet bowl for no reason
